Thought I'd take a moment to say hello. I recently relocated to rural Northwest Ohio from Colorado in an attempt to find a community to serve and to fulfill my need to be more self-sufficient.
I helped care for my Uncle's chickens all winter, and realized having my own chickens wasn't that big of a deal. I bought an assortment at the feed store this spring, and my roosters are entering adolescence. Some more gracefully than others.
My chickens are housed in a coop with a fenced yard. They get garden and butcher scraps in addition to their feed, forage and bugs from the garden. Most of the roosters will end up in the freezer, but I think I'm going to keep my Jersey Giant hens and my Uncle's handsome black rooster over the winter. They are valuable to me as garbage disposals. I raise rabbits, and the chickens are happy to eat what the dogs can't have on freezer camp day.
