Of the various homestead ducks, I have two favorites: Mallards and khaki Campbells. Mallards have a nice flying ability and tend to stick around the area that they were raised in. They are super active and good at foraging.

Khaki Campbells are super egg layers, which is what the mallard lacks. Mallard hens only lay a few eggs seasonally that are often used for breeding instead of collection. Campbells lay year round and lay huge eggs, but are on the heavier side and cannot fly as well.

Wouldn't it be perfect to have a duck breed that lays like a campbell yet is lightweight and capable of flight like a mallard?

Has any of you ever crossed a mcMurray hatchery domestic flying mallard with a khaki Campbell? Will the cross work and have lightweight, flying khakis?

My khaki can fly just fine on her own. She just doesn't because none of her buddies can. She's also already pretty close to the same size as a wild mallard. She's not much more than half the size of the other breeds in her flock

If you try it, use Khaki drakes and mallard hens. Holderread says in his book that egg laying ability seems to pass from Khaki drakes. This cross would also be sex-linked for the first cross. All the boys would have black like a mallard drake and the girls would have brown and look like chocolate mallards.
