March 2023 hatch-a-long

My last hatch ended up being 26 healthy chicks. Even though I always preach not to help, I helped. I am sooo bad at this. But like always it was a mistake and I culled the 3 I helped. That makes 59 Sulmtaler chicks for this breeding season. It will have to do for this year.
I also have 19 Augsburger chicks left. 2 had died suddenly. 4 I was able to rehome due to comb issues.
This was my breeding for this year... now on to raise those little nuggets and hopefully take them to show this fall.
I did hatch booted bantams for a friend. This is a picture I took of my Sulmtaler and this little guy who was a late hatcher. The size difference is amazing.
He has since moved to my friend to join the others.

If you don't mind me asking, what was wrong with the 3 you needed to cull? I thought 2 were shrink wrapped, but was there something else wrong? Just asking for educational (mine) purposes.

That little black one is so cute!!!! My olive eggers were small like that because they came from pullet eggs, but the one I kept is a little bit bigger than her mom now. She already lays a bigger egg too, but with the same dependable frequency her mom does.

Candled eggs today and five of the 24 where infertile. Two are questionable. But the others I could see slight movement! So excited!

If I would keep chickens just to have chickens, I might have given them a chance. But as a breeder it makes no sense to keep these chicks. And from my experience they probably wouldn't have made it. Sadness moma Goldie lost a baby. Probably happened sometime early this morning. We had a huge drop in temperature here last night/early this morning. Looks like it was trampled or smothered.
