To be honest, if you get real close, there are subtle layers of browns, taupe, and indigo... but you really have to get close :)
But that's what gives the neutral areas its depth.
Its not weird.... if you like it, then do it. If you want to paint right up to the other objects, then make that paint DRY before doing the background.

I use TONS of reference material. Usually photos I take, but I have several friends who are photographers who give me tons of material. I will draw or paint something for them.... they shoot pictures for me.
