Just to clarify, my flock does not have AI.
I am attempting to research for a mandatory paper I have to write. I was hoping some people on here could share some of their experience with AI.
My main questions are
-What happens after a flock is diagnosed, not what the government fact sheets say, what really happened.
-How do they take care of the huge number of birds at large poultry farms?
-Has anyone has received compensation?
-What do you get payed for and does, or did, it cover the costs of restarting? I don't need exact numbers, just whether it was an acceptable payout.

Hi,

The members here are mostly backyard chicken keepers, so you won't get much info about what the big hatcheries and such do. Those I'd just contact individually.

As for me, if I had it in my backyard flock of about 40 silkies, I'd close up and quarantine the coops to identify which coop has it and which may not. I'd very sadly cull the ones in the sick and dying coop, then notify the WI State Ag Dept.

We get no money, but the state might get $$ for research/development of vaccines if we had a lot reporting it.

If I wound up having to cull them all, I'd start raising ducks and hubby would get his goat he's been wanting, but no room.

Your questions are geared for large commercial operations. You may want to contact poultry farms and/or hatcheries that have actually been "shut down" and ask them your questions.

Otherwise, you can glean what you can from news articles, business and industry news, etc. You may find information about number of losses and compensation in these.

Good luck with your paper.
