This bottle is only 25 mg/ml, so the average 5 pound laying hen would get ~12 ml twice a day.doh..it says right on the bottle 125mg = 5ml. So anyway, upping her dosage, thanks everyone for the help.
Would you be able to advise me from your Veterinary Handbook? I am in the uk and the vet gave me amoxycillin capsules 500x250mg every 12 hours yet there aren't 12 hrs of daylight, 10 at most at the moment. I have to give her second dose after around 9 hours ... is this dangerous and does the dosage seem a bit too high for a hen to you? What would you advise? I plan to ring the vet on Monday to query this. Thank you. That sounds about right to me. The dosage listed in Plumbs Veterinary Handbook is 125 mg twice a day, or 100 mg 3 times a day. I think that Casportpony has posted recently that her vet recommends 57 mg per pound twice a day. It does sound like she may have something like egg yolk peritonitis. They can get an overwhelming E.coli infection from that. Hopefully, you can keep her comfortable. Offering some wet chicken feed with an occasional bit of chopped egg, tuna, or some chopped beef liver may help.
