Definitely check your city and county laws on this. They are different every where. But using traps or poison might be illegal no matter what (because you can harm other animals in the process)
I bet in my county I could shoot a coyote, as long as I am using firearms safely and not endangering my neighbors. But snap traps and bait are illegal because it may harm other animals, some protected or endangered, or even someone else's pet. This is why we haven't poisoned our coyotes yet, because I would be devastated if I ended up poisoning a neighbors dog, or if a hawk ended up feasting on some bits and died. But if I was ever quick enough with my .22, I'd kill 'em!
