Barred Cochin question?

For type (breed characteristics) Tom's hen is a beautiful example of what a cochin should look like in size and shape. Color in barred cochins is hard to achieve and like Tom said they are coming around and in a couple more generations he should have good crisp barring. I currently have some F1 barred cochins (project) that are about 9 weeks old, all males and will be crossed back to black females this spring. The barreds are not common but are still in existence and breeders like Tom are working not only to keep them around but also up to the Standard description. Thanks Tom!

Blessings,

Bo

ya i like the pic of that one too. really nice looking bird. thanks and good luck on your f1 project.

Can someone none biased tell me what they think about "MY" birds. they are the giant type and are the right size per standard description. ive never seen very many cochins much less the barred type so im ignorant to how mine look. thanks for you time and patience.

Large Fowl Barred Cochins are not very common. There are some out there, but few and far between, especially of any quality as far as breed standards go. Beside myself I know of 3 others that have Large Barreds. Bantam Barreds are a bit more common, but still not many out there at the shows. Unfortunate, because a good one is nice to look at.

i love your bird. what do you think of mine. Have you also raised any large blue cochins. With a name like cochinman i bet you know allot about cochins. I noticed my females grew new shinny hackle feathers in just a week or two after the males started growing theirs. IS this normal for all cochin's pullet to hen transformation.

Cochinman (or anyone, please!), any suggestions? I have one Barred Cochin. I believe it's a pullet. I didn't realize they were so uncommon. She's 7 wks and a few days. Have had some 'surprises' with the different breeds as some develop so much earlier. I have a Buttercup that's been crowing since 6 wks.! My Barred has vulture hocks and the biggest feet I've ever seen! She not only looks huge, she's got quite the body weight. I've also have two Buffs, one of which is showing what looks to be a roo appearance just in the last few days. Are they a little slow to mature? Although my Bar makes the rest look little, she (maybe) seems to be the slowest to feather in. She has the bars, but still feels so soft, not as stiff feathered as the rest, although the buffs are pretty soft, too. Not much info found in my travels! I lost a Bar and two Blues within days of getting them. Very bummed. Changing the subject; when I see pics of other chicks of the same age (all my other breeds, Turken, Buttercup, Orpington, Buff Cochins) mine seem to be more matured. Is it the variety of food and exercise? Really stumped for sexing info with the Turkens. I guess what I'm asking is are Cochins slow to develop? Maybe because of their size? I'd appreciate any sites any one could suggest!

Here's my son's Barred Cochin. We think his barring is a little light. Should we pair him up with my daughter's blue cochin hen to darken the bars or to her red or buff cochins to try to achieve that beautiful Buff Barred Cochin?

Poor Tanker took a beating in the rain!

18 months to mature

Interesting thread. 6 weeks ago, I received Cochin from MPC. I ordered Partridge Cochin, 5 pullets, 3 cockerels. 1 DOA. The chicks looked right, but as they are feathering in, they definitely have a barred feather pattern. On the Cochin thread, I was told a Partridge has a penciled feather pattern. One of the cockerels has penciled hackles, but the rest of the body is barred in a gold/brown and black pattern. The rest of them show no signs of penciling. So do I actually have Barred Cochin?

Hi im new to byc and this is my first time raising chickens. I have 3 barred cochins that are 3 1/2 weeks old. Ive been worried one might be a boy because i read that only boys can be lighter colors but from the looks of this thread that isnt the case? I have 2 that are more black with white and one that is white with black. The white one also is maturing slower although is healthy and active can anyone give me thier opinion?
