I have a few chickens about 4 to 5 weeks old in a good-sized brooder. It is kept in very clean conditions, clean water and plentiful food. When I clean brooders I have extra brooders so it is easy just to swap the chickens back and forth and use a fresh brooder. This morning while I was checking food and water in a fresh and clean brooder, I noticed that one of my four to five week old chickens what is dead. I picked it up and it was still limp and warm so I believe it just happened within the hour. Another one was acting really slow and druggie. So I picked her up to check on her and her butt exploded blood all over the ground. She went into a seizure and almost flapped out of my hands. I put her down on the ground where she slapped and kicked and went limped and blood drained out of her bottom in a puddle. I have never witnessed anything like this and quite possibly I think she may have worms. But the clean living conditions has me puzzled of how she could contrack worms. Any ideas? I have limited internet connection the last couple days so I really can't correspond back and forth that well. Although I will be reading your replies.

I would get Corid (amprollium) from your feed store in the cattle medicines. Dosage is 2 tsp of liquid or 1.5 tsp of the powder per gallon of water for 7 days. Change the water each day to keep it clean. It sounds like you may be dealing with a bad strain of coccidiosis. Sorry for your loss.

Coccidiosis is in their gut and in soil, and they normally build up a resistance to it as they grow. I usually place a small piece of sod into my brooder when chicks are a few days old. They peck at it and get exposed to a little coccidia, and gradually grow tolerant of it.

Thank you for your reply. This morning I already put liquid corid / 9.5 ml per gallon of water in with them to treat them. The seizure from the sick chick started immediately upon drinking the corid. The rest of the birds seem to be doing fine. I believe that last one was too far gone and there was nothing I could do by then.

If any look particularly weak or sick, you may give them 2 drops of undiluted Corid twice a day to give them a jump start on the medicine. If you feed does not contain probiotics, you can give them some plain yogurt (a tsp per chicken) into some wet chicken feed during and after treatment. You also can wet the feed with Corid water, but change it daily so there is no mold.
