Happy Easter, my friend.
This hatch is flying it seems. Hope they all hatch for you...I candled the eggs today (day 12 for the marans), or at least I gave it a good go using an iPhone torch.
My best observations were that 4/6 DCM eggs were good (decent for eggs surviving Royal Mail) and 3/3 BlCM eggs were good, though Chanel’s shells are so dark it’s hard to see anything definite. Yes I did slip another of her eggs under a day after setting the others off!
Also got 3/3 silkies (one was broken) and 1/2 olive eggers (one was broken against the silkie egg). It’s safe to say Blue hasn’t decided to have children this year again, I discarded the Brahma egg with no development at all.
9 days left on the marans, 7 on the others.
I raise Marans and Brahmas. But Brahmas are just my favorite bird.I processed an 8 month old cockerel and he dressed out at 5.3 pounds, longer time to feed him, but a very nice looking bird for the kitchen.
I hadn't considered the size for being broody and covering more eggs, but very true about the silkies being limited in size and ability to tackle many eggs in comparison.
One day I'll have Welsummers and Marans, still working on those two![]()
The pantaloons on a proper orp would complement your vision nicely!View attachment 4023981Some drawings I did to visualise what I want my ‘grouseleg’ breed to look like. It might be optimistic, such as the fullness of the saddle.
The drawing from the front shows the almost ‘snowman’ profile, with the body being broken down into three progressively wider chunks.
This is probably the last post on these until I make progress with them (or anyone has any ideas or input).
Queue silkie photos!
I have considered orpies for three reasons: like you said, the pantaloons, but also the chunkiness and the full, rising saddle/cushion.The pantaloons on a proper orp would complement your vision nicely!
