i don’t know if this is the right place to post this? but oh well. i’ve been thinking about it, and what would the possible outcome be if i let my silkie cockerels be with my bigger, mixed breed girls? i plan on getting some other silkie pullets for my boys and making them their own separate area eventually, but would it be alright to let my boys be with my older girls when they are big enough, and if i let my girls sit on some eggs eventually, what would maybe come of it? i have two silkie cockerels who aren’t full bred either and should carry the frizzle gene (rooster they came from was a splash silkie and hen was a white frizzle cochin i think), and my three older girls i have absolutely no idea what they are and i’ve asked before but nobody is ever able to help. i wouldn’t be selling the chicks or anything, so the outcome really isn’t all that important- i’m just very curious

When they are big enough, they can go with your larger girls. Just make sure the hens don't pick on them too badly.

If your roosters are frizzled, they do carry the frizzle gene. If they are not frizzled, they did not end up inheriting the frizzle gene. If your roosters are frizzled and you have frizzled hens, don't breed them! Some of the chicks will hatch with deformities that will greatly reduce their quality of life. Frizzles should only be bred to non-frizzles.

If you hatch eggs from the silkie roosters and light skinned hens, you will get a sex link cross. Pullets will get black skin, legs, comb and wattles. Cockerels will have light skin, legs, and red comb and wattles.

i had no idea! the person said that they carried the gene, but that’s good to know. i’m quite new to all of this. since my silkie cockerels aren’t full bred, they don’t have all of the regular silkie characteristics. no black skin & one of them has a single comb. i’m quite sad that they don’t carry the gene! i’ve been under the impression all along that they did

We had a little silkie roo in with our Cochin hens for a year and he proved to be more prolific than our cochin roo when it came to fertility of incubated eggs this spring! And he got along with the flock fine 😊

that’s so neat! i absolutely love my boys, they are incredibly sweet but they are still young so i know that their personalities could possibly change. i got two hoping for at least one pullet, but you know how that goes haha! i had a feeling from the very start that they were both boys but everyone called me crazy. turned 9 weeks old on wednesday. my top girl in my main coop is incredibly bossy (we literally call her gobble guts because of how greedy and bossy she is) so i don’t know how she would take to having a rooster thats smaller than her. she might need a bigger, older guy to put her in her place.

Awe, those boys are cute! We got some lovely silkie Cochin cross pullets this year. They’re super cute with little head puffs and they often took after the colouring of the mother (we got gold, silver laced, black, and a frosted partridge pattern).

they sound very cute! cochins are definitely on my list of breeds that i want to get, which is unrealistically long. i still have a lot to learn when it comes to chicken keeping as it’s only my first year, but it’s been so much fun so far.
