Hello Everyone!

Just some background information. I have 4 ducks all just over 15 weeks old. 1 female Khaki, 1 female Pekin, 1 male Khaki and last but not least 1 male Runner. My female pekin came to me as a day old duckling-blind, she will on/off have a bum leg (but able to walk) and has an angel wing (yes, I have attempted to fix it, but when its wrapped she can't get around with he bummed leg).

Long story short, 1st yes...I know I have a high male to female ratio. I am hopfully next week picking up 10 laying females. But anyways, this morning I noticed my female pekin had blood pouring out of one of her wings when I let them out of the coop. Initially I thought something got in, but after evaluation she had several feather broken including some blood feathers. I took care of the issue at hand. Also over the past week I notice more and more white feathers all over the coop and run. They were all in the freshly cleaned pool today and I noticed both Khakis were picking feathers of the Pekin. At 1st I thought they were cleaning her, until the female Khaki got onto her back, as if she was playing...but looked more then playing. I yelled at her and she got off. I then seen that the Khaki male got onto the Khaki female, they looked to be mating. He looks to mate rough. He grabbed the back of her head, kept holding it under water and sat on her for awhile.

I am unsure if my female Pekin is getting picked on by both Khakis? I am also wondering if the broken feathers were from them being rough with her? They could also be broken from her being clumsy, but my gut says its from the others.

Is it normal for a female to sit on another female in the water? Also is it normal for them to over clean my Pekin? Or does it really come down to them being big bullies?!?!?

Please help!

Duck mating is rough! - The drakes hold on to the duck's neck feathers and sometimes rip them out. Also in a newly established flock there will be fights between females where a female mounts another female to dominate. That is normal behavior and you should only interfere when the inferior duck's life is in danger. My two drakes were fighting about a Buff Orpington female, Erpelchen the BO drake was on top of her and Limpy, my older Indian Runner drake was trying to drag him off and the poor girl almost drowned in the pool. One hour time-out in the drake jail (duck-house) for both. Interestingly they both alone in jail are the best buddy's…

Thank you for the input.

This morning I needed to pull a blood feather that was bleeding all over from her right wing. At 1st I though it was injury, she will run into things. But now I have seen them bullying her. I was outside all day with them. At 1st I thought they were grooming her. So I still monitored, but let it be.

Tonight I went to put them into the coop and she was bloody again! Now they got the left wing, and the blood feather on her back side. Again, I needed to pull blood feathers from my poor girl.

I have a drake Khaki that I think is the instigator, then the other drake and female go along with picking at her. She has been such a trooper. This evening I separated her to let her relax and heal. I may keep her separated for several days.

WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH THE MEAN DRAKE?! I feel like he should be the one to be all alone, but them I'm afraid the others will still pick at her...any suggestions?!

The Drake is probably trying to breed the Pekin Hen. Animals will pick on sick or injured so possibly they don't want her around anymore. Keep her separate or with Birds that get along with her. Ducks are sexual and Hens do breed other Hens. Regularly I have Duck sandwiches in my kiddie pool...:D

:lau :gig You sure you don't want the triple duck burger? Its just 50 cents more than the double duck burger…
I know what you're talking about, every-time i fill up their water bowls with cold fresh water they start "burgering"…
