Can you keep ducks without a fence?

You might try a compromise. Find a breed of duck that matures to a size a hawk will be unlikely to take. Pen them up securely at night. Use the cute picket fence with a electric wire around the outside to discourage coyote and stray dogs. The wire can be set up to be very difficult to see. You could also figure out a way to add dense shrubs or some man made shelter so the ducks could take cover.

I'm with those that try to balance quality of life (I like my birds to free range during the day) with keeping them absolutely safe. I was surprised to see a mature bald eagle circling my yard (and my ducks and chickens) the other weekend. I've never seen one here before and this huge bird was definitely looking for an easy meal. Lovely bird, I was just fortunate to be outside when it stopped by. All the chickens and ducks disappeared under cover - FAST.

I use dog exercise pens linked together. You can get them at a good price at allpetfurniture.com
I have five, I link them together, and then the yard is moveable, easily portable, and effortless.
