Chickcozy incubator

I assume I’d see some movement if they were alive? I think all are dead :(

I should’ve done this earlier, two were fully developed, one I think couldn’t get to the air sac, its stomach was facing the air cell. The other one something broke through membrane but not the beak, maybe a foot?
Sorry for your losses. I’ve been there, and lost many chicks that I could have probably saved if I had intervened earlier. So now I am definitely an “early assister” (not too early, but at the first signs of trouble.) But hopefully you were able to get some practice on these chicks and the next time you’ll be ready to help if needed!

I think that’s exactly right, I did learn a lot tonight. With saddled air sacs I think earlier intervention is definitely needed.

The brown egg I think I definitely could’ve saved so that one hurts. The chicks were huddled around that one too, I knew something was alive in there.

I really appreciate you walking me through those steps.

My preorder that I placed way back in the fall actually was processed today so I’ll have more eggs arrive next week so I’ll definitely be prepared next time! Thanks again.

Hi @Slothinc I’m hatching my preorder, only one saddled airsac this time. But I’m worrying about if it’ll need help.

Only on day 20 but 4/6 of the crele legbars have pipped, the saddled air sac one and one other have not. When do you think I should assist? I have marked where the air cell is.

Hey so sorry I just saw this!! I would suggest doing a quick candle on the two that havent pipped! Just be super fast in taking them out and putting them back. (Dont lift the lid up very high.) It just really helps to know if they are internally pipped. If they aren’t internally pipped, I have found that usually my efforts to help them don’t work. But if they aren’t internally pipped internally pipped, you can put a safety hole on the top of the egg (where the air cell is) just to ensure they are getting oxygen. They should be okay until morning at least if you do that. If they still aren’t externally pipped by morning, I would probably take them out and candle again and if no progress (if they aren’t filling up all or most of the air cell area) then I would likely start to help them!

I hope you have a wonderful hatch with these eggs!!! 🙏🙏🙏💕

Thank you!

So just to make sure I’m understanding before I take them out, candle, check to see if they have internally pipped, and put the small hole either way?

If the chick is malpositioned will it be able to pip through the membrane?

So sorry again, I didn’t see this last night! I only put a safety hole if they have internally pipped. I personally haven’t had much success helping if the chicks dont internally pip. Putting a hole in before they internally pip can cause the membrane to dry out and make it harder for them to internally pip.

Malpositioned chicks are very hard to assist because I can never tell where the beak is. I hope they are doing okay this morning!!!

Well I didn’t hear any chirping or see anything when I candled so I did put a crack in the air sac, and I guess it hadn’t internally pipped. No change by noon today so I cracked the shell a little more. I think the membrane had dried a bit, I cracked it a little and it looked like the membrane itself was breathing if that makes sense. There’s some blood visible. I put it back in the incubator… I thought it might be alive but I don’t know…

I don’t want to contaminate the others with bacteria if it’s dead…

At this point I would probably take off the entire shell over the air cell (carefully using tweezers) then moisten the membrane with warm coconut or olive oil. If I could see where the beak is at, and there aren’t huge blood veins blocking it, I would tear it open a little right there and try to get the beak out the hole so it can breathe.

Poor thing!! Probably malpositioned!! It is hard to tell in the pic but are there lots of thick red veins still in the membrane? If not, I might start tearing it open a tiny bit and use like a blunt toothpick to search around for the beak. It may be just covered up by a wing. But just be really careful if you do. It can go wrong easily. Have cornstarch or styptic powder on hand to stop the bleeding.
