I am newer to chickens, and really new to chicken genetics. I am wondering about how much it matters the breed of rooster vs hen. ie I’ve seen Maran over Ee to or Americana, but not the other way around, does that matter? I have an EE cockerel (gamebird rooXcream legbar hen) so if I cross with White Blue chocolate or brown egg laying hens what color eggs will we get? Is there a good source for chicken genetics I could read? I’ve mainly found sources for 1 specific cross and not variations.

The reason for using True breeding stock(Maran and Ameraucana) is that you can guarantee that the F1 pullets(first cross) will lay Olive eggs, the reason for using a Dark Brown egger over a Blue egger is that the Brown egg shell color trait is a polygenic trait that expands multiple mutation and alleles and a few are sex linked so by crossing a Maran to Ameraucana you are maximizing the inheritance of the polygenic trait on the F1 pullets, now you can do the reciprocal cross(Ameraucana Rooster over Maran hens) too and still get an olive egger but perhaps not as dark as the first type cross, The reason of not using EE roosters over Maran Hens is that you can't guarantee that your F1s will lay green eggs since many EEs have the blue egg shell gene on it's heterozygous form(O/o+)
