Chicken oddities: what’s something you wish your chicken/chickens didn’t do?

Yep that’s right up there, with pooping in a clean waterer. Particularly chicks. I’m not even sure how they manage to do that!
Edit: no that’s not right up there with trudging through freezing weather. But it still drives me bananas lol.

I too have booted Snow White Cochins and insist on not only going out in the rain, but finding the muddiest puddle in the history of man to stomp around in.
Or they’ll have clean cold water to drink from, and prefer the nastiest mud puddle.
I have light brahmas and lavender cochins who are a light silver. They do the exact same! The last giant storm we had with a baby tornado, tore down their front run, so we had to move them to the back. It rained for a week straight. Never a light mist, but always full on rain and the lows were in the mid 30'sF. I swear they refused to take cover. There's hiding spots all over the large run, but no! Rolling in the mud puddles and standing in the rain soaking wet. I kept putting them in the coop to dry off, and they refused to stay and dry off. Finally I gave up. They are still alive, so that's good. 🙄😆
But yeah, these light colored booted chooks love the mud for some reason. My dark brahmas and black cochins don't do it.

Ah so making sure she was ok.

I’ve got one hen, Betty, that I have to bathe at least 3 times a month. Her bottom gets..unpleasant. Again I think it’s for purpose. She knows after a bath she gets green beans and tuna all to herself.
I gave up on washing my lavender cochins butts. They are not fans of it, and it gets poopie angain right after. Sometimes the other chicken get that way, but in the morning they've cleaned themselves. Not the cochins. Such diry birds for being so beautiful. I do verbally shame them, but they don't care.

One thing mine do that drives me nuts is making dirt bath holes all over the run despite having several designated bath stations. They pick places that are inconvenient like right in front of the gate or along the bottom of the fence. I have to fill those holes in or two things will happen. 1) I will break an ankle stepping in the awkward hole by the gate with arms full of feed or scratch. 2) a predator will have an easy time getting under the super expensive fence we just built. Why do I even try to have nice things! 😆

What a fun and funny thread! The thing that drives me the most crazy is mine lay eggs everywhere! I have perfectly good chicken boxes and they lay them on the ground or in the goat part of the barn or in the bag that I get the shavings from! Every now and then I really have to hunt when I can't find some of the more unique eggs that I know are being laid almost daily!

That used to be a big issue for us, too. We put the fake eggs in the nest boxes, and they finally figured it out. We also use old 2 drawer file cabinets with the top drawer removed. They really like those a lot. I think because they are big, but also make them feel secure. I spent a lot of money on the fancy nest boxes with the roll away bottom. The kind where the egg rolls into a box with a lid. Nope. They hate those. My husband got the idea for the file cabinets at a yard sale. Got two of them for $8.
