Yesterday my neighbors 2 dogs broke through my 6-7ft shadow box fence. I woke to hear my chickens panic. They killed my most favorite white Brahma who was 4, my Easter Egger is fast and was able to hide and unharmed. My Orpington has a large opened wound. We took her to the vet and he recommended irrigating it and silver sulfadiazine ointment. She goes for a recheck Friday. Looking for opinions on her wound left open vs stitched and possibility of survival. I have her in a large bin, she is eating and drinking however I only noticed her 💩 1x today.
*Pic is from yesterday with ointment at vet and then this morning.

Hi,

So sorry about this horrific thing those dogs did to your chickens. :hugs

Had you asked your vet about stitching it? Chickens are pretty resilient, and she might wind up just fine and healing up the way she is. Glad she's eating and drinking. Did the vet recommend you irrigate it too and send you home with some of the silver sulfadiazine ointment? I'd have thought the vet would have prescribed an antibiotic, but they must've not found any punctures and that cream is an antibiotic cream.

Do you have any chicken vitamins for their water? We have both Poultry Cell and Nutri-Drench. I'd give her vitamin water to help her healing and fighting off of any infection.

:hugs I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm glad the vet was able to see her. I'd follow his care plan.

Leave the wound open, it will heal from the inside out.

It looks good so far. Keep the ointment on the wound like you are doing.

IF you do find that she starts to pick at the wound for some reason, cover her lightly with an infant's t-shirt.

Chickens can recover from severe wounds, so do the best you can.

These Hens survived and had deeps wounds too, they now back with their flock. You may find the threads helpful and hopeful.

My husband went over yesterday evening when he got home from work. The neighbor said he heard me crying but it wasn't his business so he left for work as he was running late 😕. He also told me husband he thinks his two dogs have been planning it for a while-🙄 he then told my husband he would check the side of his fence on .m Sunday! Later in the evening he came over and dropped cookies off and 150.00 to my 18yr old son and told him he didn't realize what was going on until my husband told him.
I only have 3 chickens as we are in a residential neighborhood on only .17acre. We buried our Brahma and brought our E.E in just so she can see her last flock mate. We live in FL and our garage is even hotter than outside so we have them both in our bedroom .
Tonight my daughter and I did make a bandana covering with a nonstick bandage under it as she was constantly pecking at her open wound. Tomorrow I also have the Vetrcyn spray arriving and also have been feeding her herbs and berries I grow that are great for inflammation. I'm starting to wonder if she is in so much pain she can't poop but if she was in so much pain would she be able to peck at her wound

Just put the shirt over her wings?

Not really sure dogs plan like that. More likely everything just aligned for them

As for the pecking, make sure the wound isn't dried out, it might be itchy for her and that's why she's pecking.
My husband had to remain calm when he told him that because it showed he was aware what his dogs were trying to do , my husband reminded him that dogs don't plan and someone should then be in the backyard with them and not left alone

Sometimes when animals are injured or stressed, it can slow down their digestive system. If she's eating and drinking that's really good. I'd follow your vet's advice.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your chicken and I'm glad you have two alive who can keep each other company. I hope your chicken continues to improve. It sounds like (hopefully) she's already on the right path.

And I'd really think about the security of your yard/fence/chicken run. Now that the neighboring dogs have in their little doggy memories that they ate a delicious chicken, they will want to come back for seconds. (I love dogs, but in this case they are now a predator with a memory of your yard as a place to get a meal). I know that in theory it's your neighbor's responsibility to make sure the fence is secure from his side, but they say "If you want something done right . . . ".

Crazy thing is I call my Easter Egger ( I think that is what she is) my bitchy Bella as she has always liked men vs female. She would peck my feet, fluff up and chase me. She did it so much that when I told my beloved Brahma , Elie she was near me.... My Elie would keep her from biting me 🤣💞 she was so ridiculous how she ran , came when I called her and growled at my Bitchy Bella. But NOW that Elie died My Bitchy Bella has become the most sweetest and keeps wanting to cuddle next to me - in my bed, on my couch. She will find me! I joke and say she is counting her blessings and she knew I was what got the dogs away by screaming BUT what really would suddenly change her behavior
