Dog killed neighbor’s chickens

I agree with others' advice and would also address the issue with your other neighbor's son. You were home and he could easily have come to your door before going into the yard. Otherwise, he has to wait until you are home. The lock will probably solve that, too, but the young man should be made aware of what his actions have actually cost everyone involved so he can learn to exercise better judgment in the future.

A couple of weeks ago, I let my dogs out in the morning, only to realize too late that a neighbor down the street's chicken was in my fenced side yard. My neighbor had not counted when he closed his coop the night before and a rescue chicken that hadn't integrated into his flock yet was left out for the night. Apparently, she went wandering. I felt really bad, though I know it was a simple accident on both our parts.

As neighbors, we don't want these kinds of things happening if we can avoid them. Good relationships with neighbors are valuable. I hope you are able to resolve things with you neighbor whose chickens were killed.

Two things potentially at play. Neighbor has social skill issues (common with poultry keepers). Neighbor realizes potential for law suite where he would be the defendant.
I agree. I thought the note might remove the fear of law suit(or any involvement of any authorities). Can't do much about social skills, LOL.

Maybe I joined the wrong club. What animal keeper excels at social skills? :D

:goodpost:You brought up a good point, Duckworth, regarding the boy trespassing which set off this chain of unfortunate events. Hopefully his parents will turn this situation as a chance to teach their child about careless behavior and what can be the outcome of such a lack of judgment. We have three Huskies and we have had our dogs let loose for the exact same thing - the neighbor's boy came into our yard to retrieve a ball. After that, and the time the meter reader left the gate open, we installed a second lock on all gates along with signs on the gate (Keep gate closed - dogs in yard). A child entering a neighbor's yard uninvited and who has dogs could be a very dangerous situation for a child; I've read about so many dog attacks on children because a child crossed over into the neighbor's yard.
