My dogs have been staying outside in a fenced yard.I noticed them digging a lot, and caught my mini pinscher eating a mouse the other day. Is it a major health risk for them? I was thinking worms would be an issue. I don't think bait poison will be a problem inside the yard. I was going to fence them up away from the mice area, but on the other hand I would not mind them cleaning up the yard. Also, they seem to be having a lot of fun chasing the mice.

So other than worming them more often is there any other concerns with dogs eating the mice...besides being really gross?!?!!?!?

I had adopted a stray GSD - Jack - from a Brooklyn junkyard - he ate them religously everyday, had a hard time breaking him of the habit
I got him when he was 10,, so I guess it wasn't a problem.

Thanks! I just let them out and they are happily digging.I had no idea I had mice nesting in the middle of my yard.I bet even the chickens would have a peck or two!

When I trap mice, I feed them to the chickens. They love playing keep-away with mice. The rooster even ate one once and he usually lets his girls get the best treats.

The only thing I would worry about dogs or chickens eating them would be if they were poisoned. Otherwise I would not worry about it.

Now, if my dogs would only learn how to catch those moles instead of just digging where they used to be.

other then a secondary poisoning and tape worms I would say its not a great risk. I cant get my darn cat to stop eating mice and he always has tapeworms. We now call him "worm butt boy" He is forever getting wormed because he wont stop. I know you said that YOU dont use poison but the neighbors might. Just be careful

worms and fleas are concerns, make sure your using a topical flee preventative and deworm frequently (tape which is common in mice can kill if it gets bad enough)

if you have any neighbors neer by id ask them if they ever put out poisen for mice issues, dogs can easily be poisended eating a mouse that has been killded by mouse/rat poisen (and its not a nice way to go).
however, poisen is more of a concern if the mice hes eating are already dead, if hes hunting and eating live mice, fleas and worms are your only real concerns.
oh and make sure hes kept up to date on his rabies...
mice are mammals and while its rare (typically anythign that could give them rabies would eat them too) they can contract rabies.

My daughters mutt has caught several in the house and eats them. I stopped laying out bait when I got chickens. It is so disgusting! But I have a cat living under my house and the pup in my house and the chickens around my house... They won't last long around here. I think I need another cat though. Two's company.

I'd be afraid to let them eat them in case they had been poisoned...

My dogs would dig up the moles, they'd leave a trench behind em, but would eventually catch the mole.
