A neighbours dog got loose (again), came only our property and savaged our chickens. He broke through the large wire run and the smaller hardcloth run too (must of been in a frenzy to get through that).

Chicken One is dead so that's out of the question. Can't do much for her except bury her (My Ayam Cemani, which stings a lot).

Second chicken has a bite mark that looks failry deep, I can see blood, but that's stopped, it's definitely gone through skin, muscle and feathers pulled off on her rump but she's eating, drinking and walking around.

Third chicken has been defeathered on her back and the skin looks torn but no bite marks into the muscle. She's quiet and not eating.

Fourth chicken is showing major signs of stress, quiet, was panting (that's stopped now) and is going to sleep but shows no physical signs of trauma.

Fifth chicken looks like she may have an egg that may have broke inside her during the stress, I could see runny egg on her behind but can't see any trauma (will have a better look in the daylight tomorrow).

The other five chickens have minor cuts and scraps but are relatively unharmed and not showing signs of stress or discomfort.

Outside of isolating each chicken, putting tea tree on their wounds, keeping them quiet (which we have done all of already), is there any other advice you guys can give to help speed their recovery?

Insult to injury, our neighbours, despite knowing the havoc their dog has wraught, hasn't even apologised to us yet, but that's just salt in my wounds and I can deal with that myself.

Thanks in advance all, sorry for the huge post.

I'm so sorry that happened and your neighbors behavior is awful.. I have no advice except to say to wash wounds with saline solution and treat for shock. All the experts on here will chime in and give the real advice soon!

I’m so sorry to hear about your chickens. This is so infuriating the neighbors are like that. Im so sorry. Treat them for the stress promptly by providing them with electrolytes. Something like Gatorade or pedialyte works great or you can look up homemade solutions easily on google using ingredients from your kitchen. Try to get them interested by dipping their beaks in the solution or dropping some into their beaks with a dropper. Next try keeping them somewhere warm, dark and quiet for a while to alleviate shock.

After they calm down tend their wounds unless there were any that needed tending straight away. Rinse the wounds with saline or a wound spray such as Vetericyn. Saline can be made at home easily in a pinch. Apply triple antibiotic ointment (without pain relief) to the wounds to keep them moist and protected.

I hope the rest can pull through okay. Shock can last for up to 48 hours, so be weary of that and watch closely. I’m so sorry you lost your favorite.

Two of my girls are now dead, my favourite one couldn't take the stress. I'm devastated 💔
So sorry for your loss. Dogs have very powerful jaws and can easily crush bone and internal organs of a chicken even without breaking the skin, so there may be more damage than you can actually see. I hope the rest can recover. Recommend you install an electric fence and if it were me, I'd demand my neighbor pay for it as the necessity for it is due to their negligence in controlling their dog.

I have gone down to our local farm shop, bought and put it up today already. I thought this may help too, hopefully another level of security for my remaining girls.

So I lost one bird in the incident and then a second from stress the next day.

The remaining two that were injured have been doing well, no pus in the wounds and both are eating (albeit limited) and drinking. They are being kept quiet in my downstairs bathroom whilst they recover.

The girls that were not injured are outside and seem to be doing well, some even laid eggs yesterday.

Electric fence is up and running around the perimeter of run and hopefully we can all recover from this. First time I slept last night in 3 days. Still gutted for my two little girls, they were both so friendly and bright eyed. I had even trained one to do tricks for treats. I raised them both from chicks.

I so badly wish there was something else we could say or do to help you through this situation. The pain and anger you’re feeling must be almost unbearable. I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Glad to hear there is hope on the horizon for those recovering, though.

I hope that through all of this, the pictures and memories of your sweet girls will bring you some peace. Or that they eventually are able to. Someone once told me that our chickens bring us so many good days and a few really bad ones. Those bad ones are terrible. Feel free to share stories about them with us if it helps. What were their names? I know that you did all you could for them and they had amazing lives with you. They will be waiting for you at that big coop in the sky ❤️
