Yes, you have to be careful with the Doneks. I wouldn't say they are "dumb". Even on the contrary, compared to other breeds, I find them exceptionally inquisitive, highly trainable - smart
They just don't have such a developed/preserved orientation apparatus or homing instinct.
It is interesting that several breeds from West Asia have this in common. In a way, they look more like a ringneck dove than a "pigeon" to me. They quickly learn various tricks and remember them for a long time. My flock learned to fly with carrier pigeons for seeds in a 15 km remote field and learned to navigate the surrounding terrain within that radius. I haven't had one go missing in a long time.
