Eating duck eggs because of chicken egg allergies

Eating small amounts can increase the tolerance so it is not that bad of an idea. I'm doing better with milk since I'm having small amounts. I also used to be allergic to cats to the point that I could not breath. Well we caught a cat on our property and my body learned how to deal with it. I can pet her, but I have to make sure I don't touch my face. Allergies are a funny thing the can come and go away over the years. I would still recommend to see another allergy specialist, there have been some real big changes in the past year in the way the anti allergy shots are being made and how they work to some extend. Perhaps a new series of skin test. I know they are not fun but it may be an idea to repeat them to see the reactions extend.

My allergist actually wanted me to skip wheat for two days and then eat it one and then the same for cane sugar if I could manage it. When I said to her do you realize that means I could only eat my birthday cake if it falls on the right day and she laughed.

However I'm working on an extreme budget and feeding a family of four, so it is pretty hard to buy specialized products anymore. For a long time our budget was different and I did spend a lot of money trying to eat very specialized. I was not any healthier than I am now, so I have decided that diet is not the root of my problem.
I have, however, developed IBS just as you predicted Wifezilla. I will have to take this grains thing under consideration again. Fred Meyer's had some spelt bread that was actually pretty good. It was just four or five dollars a loaf! At this point we have been lucky to afford the big puffy cheap bread I used to hate. Hard times are here.

I just realized you are right near me savingdogs!!! I'm in Camas. I would consider myself to now be a pescatarian(vegetarian + seafood). But, like you mentioned, hard times are here and so I am really caught between a rock and a hard place. I have to make from scratch pretty much everything I eat, with the exception of loads of fresh fruit and veggies. And every label of every thing I buy has to be as simple as absolutely possible. I have to agree with some of the others, in that if your body views something as a toxin it is going to have to work overtime in trying to get rid of it always. I went through this with the soy and corn products. They are changing our food at the most basic levels(GMO's) and some portion of it touches nearly every food product out there. When your body has to fight all that unnatural stuff it gets weakened over time. Eating clean for your own body really does make a difference. I am soo much less bloated, fatigued, grumpy, and my stomach/headache/painful tender joints are sooo much subsided that I feel like my old self again. It's amazing what effect diet can really have on you. But it is a lot cheaper to eat the processed stuff. And I found we drink tons more water. I just hate feeling ripped off when I spend what pennies I do have. Sorry for the rant... and I hope you are feeling better and that the duck eggs work out well for you!!

I have pretty much depended on trying to eat whole foods. That is why the IBS is such a pain (literally), so many of the foods I was eating seem to flare it up. Now that I have this migraine-associated vertigo, I see they are recommending eliminating more foods...sheesh. Pretty soon I'll be eating deviled duck egg sandwiches on spelt bread and nothing else.

I am wheat intolerant. I did not find this out until I went through my change. I cannot eat any form of wheat, if you have a wheat allergy or intolerance, be very careful, like Wifezilla says, it will get you. Later if not sooner. You can add Diabetes and high blood pressure to her list also, that list goes on and on.

I thought I could eat wheat's ancient grains, but my problems got worse, not better. I eat alternate grains now and so do my chickens. I buy my feed from a Texas mill that uses a lot of oats instead of just wheat as the base. I mix their scratch and oat is the main ingredient, I mix it because I can't buy it, scratch is 50% of their feed.

Thanks to continually eating wheat all through my life, I cannot eat any form of wheat and absolutely no yeast. All of my bread is made with baking soda and baking powder. I am allergic to something about chickens, but find that I can raise my own and have no problem with them or their eggs. In years past I could not eat store bought eggs or chicken but could eat plain old farm eggs and "natural farm" chicken. So I started raising chickens again, now I raise most all of our meat.

My sister, for her entire life has been allergic to any chicken but she can eat egg white with no problem, no yolk though. She is affraid to try quail, which is supposed to be the mildest eggs out there. If she eats egg yolk or chicken she will end up in the hospital. She has died twice in 2 different hospitals, due to allergies. So she is very careful what she eats. She has chemical allergies also, and quess what, two weeks ago I follow in her foot steps and find out I have a problem with that now too. That problem affects breathing. You just don't process enough Oxygen to keep the brain functioning, an immune sytem and lung funtion breakdown.

So stop eating whatever you are allergic to. Find a Dr that knows about Allergies and how they build up in your system and deplete your immune system. Allergies don't just make you sick for the short term they lead to much worse and they can kill you.

You may be suffering now, but believe me, you ain't seen nothing yet. It can get a lot worse. I don't mean to be all negative, but I hope I scared you, because you have to take allergies very seriously, or you will pay a very high price years from now. I know the economy sucks right now and times are hard. But SIS never had any money to speak of, but what they ate always came first. Always. By the way, 2 weeks ago she turned 71 and is doing pretty good for a gal that shouldn't have made it past being an infant. If she could deal with it, so can you. Keep telling yourself that. At times your diet may be very limited and you may have to cook from scratch, but thats healthier anyway.

Buy the way, you can make a birthday cake without wheat flour. I make cakes, pies, bread, quick breads, and pizzas all the time and there is no wheat flour in this house.

Good Luck and just keep doing the best that you can.

Migraine - Feverfew (Herb) if you aren't allergic to it. Will take a few months before you notice an improvement. I gave DH 1 capsule morning and night for 3 years. Now retired, doesn't need it anymore. And make that Millet bread, sweeter, I see nothing wrong with that, actually is making my mouth water. Thats breakfast.

Millet bread sounds good. Actually I'd like to spend more on the special foods but I can't talk the hubby into it and he pays the bills. He has seen me be fine for long stretches while I ate all kinds of normal foods so cannot see that diet means anything at all. I'll use what you wrote to work on him some more though, thanks.

I know I'm dredging things up from last year again. But everyone is different, and there are all different kinds of allergies and sensitivities. If you are a celiac, celiac sprue, allergic or sensitive to wheat I would suggest to avoid it completely, ONLY AFTER being diagnosed! If you eliminate the suspect before being tested you can end up with faulty results. If you are celiac or celiac sprue you need to avoid gluten entirely, no cheating! Gluten damages the walls of your intestines and affects how you digest all food leading to numerous digestive problems. Celiac is best tested by a biopsy which is an invasive test. But there are other less invasive tests that are used as indicators. In any case most people don't want to pay for allergy testing and skip to the elimination diets, which can lead to skewed test results. Honestly I'd give a little blood and money over eating a specialized diet for a month.

I was lactose intolerant before having food allergy problems and my dairy showed up as a minor irritant, but I'm guessing if I drank milk it would have shown up higher. Anyway elimination diets are the "cheap" way (even though the food is not cheap) to figure out what is bothering you. However if you do the elimination diet on your own you may be screwing up future test results!

That being said I will share what little I understand about egg allergies. There are a lot of things in eggs that can be irritating. Some people (like my sister-in-law) are allergic to sulfur and there is sulfur in eggs which there by makes them allergic to eggs. Others are allergic to the proteins and have anaphylactic reactions, and some are allergic/sensitive which can cause a whole host of symptoms depending on the person. My son gets rashes and becomes cranky and whiney whenever he eats anything from his list of multiple food allergies. Personally when I ingest something from my list I experience lip swelling and inflammation (think Angelina Jolie on crack), eczema, nausea, and extreme... attitude? ahem... insert less than appropriate word here.

I'm wondering what will happen now that I want ducks. We love duck meat, but man do I miss eggs! At over a dozen a day going into the frige it is a huge reminder of what used to be my favorite breakfast. It sounds like it's hit or miss for some people. I can eat chicken (meat) and I would assume that is because the gluten from the feed has been digested by the chicken and turned into muscle. Until reading some earlier posts I would have thought the same thing about the eggs. Maybe one of these years we'll try eliminating our allergies from their feed. My son should outgrow his allergies and they are not at all severe, but apparently adult allergies don't go away so nicely. We are the red heads in the family, and his pregnancy is what seemed to kick start my adult onset food allergies.

I'm getting my ducklings this month or next and when they start laying I will just have to try one! My taste test will hopefully fall on a less busy time for us, and I will be apologizing to my husband in advance!

I was quite dissapointed when I learned I am allergic to duck eggs as well. Sigh. At least we enjoy having the ducks and I am not allergic to the meat (chicken meat either).

I have considered going 100 percent off of wheat but it is hard to afford.

Thank you for your imput! I was reading that eggs are a very common allergy so I hope a lot of folks get to learn something from this thread.

I ate an egg last night! It's been over a year since I had one. We tested the duck eggs, and I've had no reaction!! I expected to go through a week of nursing my lips back to normal and laying on the couch feeling terrible. But we have no problems, and it was sooo yummy! I wanted more, but refrained in fear of a horrible reaction. I've been reacting from cross contamination from the pan when my husband cooks his chicken eggs. I was so surprised my allergy could have gotten so severe, I had to delegate a special pan just for chicken eggs. And after eating a duck egg there wasn't even the slightest hint of inflammation.

Just being able to eat duck eggs opens up a whole new world of food in the form of baking. There are soo many things that are soo hard to bake without gluten AND eggs. I'm going to make my son some gluten free sandwich bread today that might not crumble to pieces! And maybe cheesecake is not off limits entirely! Quiches, omelets, cookies, bars, bread, and everything seems like it just got a whole lot easier. We will be freezing a lot of eggs to use for baking year round. And some Cayugas and Muscovies will be joining us soon!!
