Emu Egg Hatch-along

Pics
Sorry everyone, I keep forgetting to update 🤦🏻‍♀️

I cracked my egg when we got home and saw no development sadly. View attachment 4082021

It was a fun adventure anyway, and I learned so much from it! I hope I get to try hatching some again soon.

How are everyone's eggs/chicks doing?
Well darn! I wish you would have gotten a baby out of that egg! Definitely try again someday!

My first 4 eggs are around day 25 and the other two around day 18. Unfortunately they are STILL all losing too much weight. I have no idea how it’s possible. The incubator has been running mostly around 45% for the past week. But all the eggs are still losing at the 20% rate. It’s boggling my mind! So I am not hopeful at all 😞 I am guessing the reason they are losing so much is because they aren’t developing.

But I am still turning them every day. Starting in a few days I will be watching them for wiggles. Not expecting anything but it will still be fun to try 😅
So crazy! I can't imagine why they are all losing that much. I have had non developers that still lose the right amount, same with @MGG egg. Very odd. I hope a few go on to hatch anyway! I think you might have said, but did you get any advice from the local guy you got the eggs from on how he incubates his emu eggs?

Yesterday was day 30 for my local eggs and I *thought* I saw a few small wiggles in 2, maybe all 3. The other 2 are on day 27 today so I'll watch them closer over the weekend.

Yeah when I spoke to a local emu egg incubator he said he keeps his humidity at 40% through the whole hatch and it is perfect for our climate. So it is possible I messed them up with the lower humidity level during the first week and a half when it was around the 30% range.

I have had 3 external thermometer/humidifiers in with the emu eggs and while they do range in their humidity readings I’ve mostly been going off of the one that shows the middle number. So unless they are all way off, then I don’t know what’s going on. I did up the humidity to 50+ and will keep it there until their next weigh in on Friday. Not hopeful, but still crossing fingers that one or two may develop!

Well, after keeping the humidity closer to 50% they have finally slowed down a tiny bit on their weight loss. The oldest 4 are around the 17% mark if they continue the way they are. I have pulled them out to watch for wiggles a few times, and seen nothing. They are 30 days today.

The only things not letting me completely give up hope at this point are that they all have a lean to them, and they all get cold on air cell end but stay warm on the other end. However both of those things seem to occur in non developing eggs as well. It’s still kind of early so I will keep you all posted if I see any wiggles in the next week or so.

Glad they are holding weight better now! Don't lose hope! Day 30 is on the early end of when you can see wiggles. I mean you really have to stair long and hard and your eyes go buggy and you don't know it you did or didn't 🤣 . I have a few That are at Day 34 on Saturday that I barely just started seeing confirmed wiggles in. The others are questionable and a few days behind.

Well unrelated to chicks but here’s Ethel enjoying a soak and a rainbow. 🌈 Fred is on his way to join in.
