Those are cute ducklings!!
What kind are they??
Hi all, geeze you guys have been hatching birds like pop corn since I last checked on this site. Can't believe how big some of the birds look already.
I have been hatching eggs from my Blue Runners for the last 2 months and there has been good batches and bad batches.
So far, out of 30 eggs, I only have 18 ducklings. I was suspecting the hatch box ( home made) but last time I used it, the temp was good and I got all but one hatch.
I just bought another 1588 to use a s a hatch box thinking that it would be better, but the rate of hatch is worse. 30%.
I now suspect the feed. I've changed to breeder feed. I had the ladies on layer feed and I guess they need more prenatal vitimins & minirals for a good hatch.
My duckings are dying at day 25 or 26 and some don't pip. Very frustrating.
Here is my hatch box.
The yellow part is where I stick my hands in to check on the eggs with a candle to see if they are still alive.
It is a mayo jar with the bottom cut off, then a glove put over the jar & inserted into the side of the box. I love it.
I also have a mirror in there here so I can see the pips from the other side.
ADD aid.
There are 2 fans in there and the sponge helps keep the temp at 75% If I prop it up, it can go till 85%
The opening has been very convenient for me to candle without disrupting the humidity level for the "late bloomers"
I've had ducklings hatch from 28 to 32 days. Don't know when to toss.
Here are a few of the hatchlings.
I think I need to find a room that doesn't have a heat vent so I can put my bator in it.
Still watching temps.
