That breaks my heart šŸ˜ my Danio had a buddy, Bob, but he died. His death was unusual, because over the course of like a week or more, his belly swelled and he couldn't swim. Then he passed:(
No need to be sad, my zebra was the last of a bunch I'd bought, a survivor, lived to a ripe old age. I tried to give him a good life

I went to feed my fish this week and the loaches in the 15g aquarium didn't immediately come out as they usually do. I checked the water temperature and it was 70Ā° instead of 80Ā°! The heater had died after only two months and I hadn't noticed, my bad!

I had a spare new Fluval heater which I installed immediately, but to help my loaches I removed a gallon of water and added another gallon of warmer water from the faucet. It raised the tank temperature a little before the heater could. It's now holding at 77-78Ā°, that will work. The loaches are active again.

The heater in the 29g is keeping the temperature at 75Ā° instead of 78Ā°. The Kuhlis are still active, so I think I can hold off switching heaters, for now.

The heater in the 5.5g wasn't working either, are malfunctioning heaters contagious?!?
:he

The temperature in the 5.5g was at 68Ā° (room temperature). I put in a spare used Topfin 50watt heater, and temperature went up to 80Ā°. I dialed the heater back to the minimum and it appeared to be stuck, water hit 90Ā°. That heater went in the trash, and I moved my Red Cherry shrimp over to the 15g tank while I troubleshooted the heater situation. I dug out another used heater and installed it on the 5.5 aquarium. It has since brought the temperature up to 78Ā° and if it can hold it there I will move some shrimp back into the 5.5g, as they breed more successfully in a species-only environment.

I ordered two more heaters, on sale, but a good trusted brand, Fluval. They'll be on hand the next time I have heater issues.

WOW!!!!!

Probably time for me to update here I started my tank up again a while back this time even more heavily planted over $400 in plants and I invested in a $200 plant light so everything seems to be doing well although the light really brings out the algae so my glass gets covered every couple days no problem I just scrub it off I did have a couple deaths after the first cycle of the tank but then I let it cycle with fish for about another month before adding more and so far so good in it right now I have 5 bloodfin tetras 1 neon tetras 1 rasbora (I believe harlequin but not 100% sure) 1 kuhli loach and 1 yo-yo loach the water is a little low it evaporates pretty fast I need to do a water change in the next couple of days although with all the plants Iā€™ve been able to really cut back on the amount of water changes maybe once a month or when needed I test to water every 2-5 days so it doesnā€™t get overrun with ammonia and nitrates and nitrites and if they are high I do a water change other then that I top it up every 2-3 days since it evaporates very fast

A short video from this evening's feeding, with Ember tetras, Red Cherry shrimp, one Glow light tetra, and some of my Kuhli loaches. The big one is probably about 5" long, and 8 years old.
