They're beautiful, but their shape is a bit different from other breeds...in a subtle way.

That is it, I am done being patient with this weather and not complaining.

It is 2F right now. The horses are fed and watered along with the chickens. We have had to carry water for over 2 weeks now due to the water hose being frozen. I slipped halfway to Russ's stall carrying his water and soaked one of my pant legs and shoe. Rosie was supposed to go back to school January 7th. She is still home, bored out of her mind at this point. I am done, done you hear me with this weather. I am sick of snow, I am sick of ice. Snow has gone back on my "do not say that word or I will hurt you" list.

I agree. With the cold and my working late (and early dark in the winter - so don't get out to free range), I make good use of my bagged leaves to entertain them. I throw some scratch grain down and dump a bit pile of leaves on top - move aways over and do the same - then let them out to scratch and explore. The Ducks go CRAZY when they see a pile of leaves and immediately start 'drilling' through it (they 'dig through' it with their beaks). I dumped 1.5 bags in the run today. I'll dump some more tomorrow.
I've always thought this was a great idea. Well done.

Brrrrrrr 🥶

0°F (-18°C) this morning, 10°F (-12°C) in the coop. The 10 degree delta is holding.

I remembered you had mentioned the temp difference before and have seen the same here now that I have some weather sensors about. The panel in the coop raises the temp about ten (F) degrees higher than outside, sometimes a little more. Hazel takes a nest box far away from the panel and is fine (but first she waits somewhere on the roost bars platform, facing the direction of the pop door, until the door closes. Then she retreats to a nestbox and goes to sleep).

Little Annie is usually closest to the panel on the coldest nights, she has the smallest frame. The Buff Orpingtons may not be as cold-hardy as Buckeyes, they spend more moments during the day warming up near a panel than Hazel does. Hazel takes a turn warming too but is a determined forager and is more often scratching about the run.

-7~-8F (-22C) this morning!

Made a tent of small tarps over the warming panels corner in the run a couple of days ago, this was taken yesterday. Not nearly as pretty as @RoyalChick 's! No, I didn't clean it when I first took it down, and wasn't about to do so at 2F! But I can attest that the tarp edge dirt is a mildly interesting feature for them. Hard to see with the camera angle but they can easily walk under the edge.
