Help, How do I get rid of dead rat smell in house?

If you vacuum please do not use your regular sweeper, or you will have that smell every time you use your sweeper.
My DH said to try to get as much of the dead funk up, then try a little drop of dish soap, one drop goes a long way. Then scrub and suck up with a shop vac if you can as much water as possible. Then use 50% water 50% white vinegar and soak, such up repeat!
He was a carpet cleaner. Then have your carpet cleaned. You may have to pull up the carpet to make sure it did not soak into the pad. Try this first.
I hope you get the smell out!

MD,
I should have, since he ended up having a UTI later on and cost me more money. He died a few years later (no, I did not kill him!)

Well, I had a good sleep on the floor and the smell doesnt seem quite so bad now, however i will try some of these suggestions today in between washing a mountain load of clothes and sheets.
Thankyou to every one of you that took the time to try and help. You are the sweetest beings!!!!

Once you get rid of the worst of the smell, those little net baggies of 'volcanic rock deodorizer' really do work for lingering odors. Save the package that has the instructions on how to recharge it (something to do with salt water and sunlight), as you will probably have to do so periodically. But they are cheap and really DO help a lot.

Good luck,

Pat

Oh I hope you get the smell out - I just found this thread...... you need to leave the house for a while and come back - to make sure you're not just getting used to it!

There's a product that we've used for a long time at the group home where I work - think lots of overgrown kids that aren't all potty trained - it's called Odoban.
Recently walmart began carrying it and it's cheaper than alot of the other odor neutralizers. Works great as a cleaner and can also be used by spraying it in the air as a room freshener.

A rat died in my parent's cellar years ago. It stunk for months, the cellar door was next to the kitchen. I think they got used to it, but months after, I could still smell it. And even after a year and two, on humid days, I could still smell it. If it were me, I would toss the carpeting, or at least cut out the stinky part, and put a throw rug over the hole.

Must admit - my first thought on reading the title was that MD had MADE it over there in his Canoe and had spent the night on your FLOOR....
