Help, How do I get rid of dead rat smell in house?

if it were me i'd sacrifice the carpet. rip it out.
better to live with a less attractive looking floor than with a horrid smell.

i have to be careful about chemicals in my home but i use tons of natures miracle and vinegar. i wonder if natures miracle would help in this instance?

and this won't fix the problem but sometimes, when one of my very old dogs has a big poo accident in the house and the smell is atrocious - i will put on a big pot of boiling water and drop a bunch of cinnamon sticks into it. obviously this will fix nothing but it does help to cover the smell so that you can remain in the house and clean etc.

on a final note.
if nothing else works you may have to contact a business that deals, specifically, with the removal of stains and odors associated with death. probably a bit pricey but also, probably, better then living with that smell.

hang in there!

well my dear, if he did make it over here, he wouldnt be on the floor!!!!
He'd be in the coop!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions, I went and poured a heap of vinegar on the smelly spot now the smell has come back with a vengeance.
Im in the room watching tennis with the fan blowing air across the room and out the window.
Im renting this place until we sell our other house, ive been here 6 years and love it so much here.
That darn cat, does he know what dramas he has caused!
Ill have another go tommorrow, it is a public holiday so ill get professionals in on Tuesday!!

Oh, Have I got the thing for you!!!! This stuff is GREAT for anything stinky. I use it all over my house, by the indoor bird cages and by th diaper pail in a stocking, but you can sprinkle it on carpet. We poured some down between the walls when a chipmonk got stuck and expired their in August. Really stinky!! Good luck!!

welcome flightsofFancy, nice to meet you.
Thankyou for that, I had a look and it sounds really great, however I am in Australia and It would cost quite a bit but the time is the major factor, It would take probably 2 weeks to get here.

I will have a look on the net shortly for something local as well.
Once again, thankyou to all of you for taking time to respond to my SOS.
Its pretty bad, especially when the weather is so hot.

Probably the suggestion about ripping up the carpet is the best, though not the one you want to hear. Even if you've cleaned the carpet, things seep underneath! Another thing you might want to try ($$$) is one of the companies that specializes in clean-up. (Fire, floods, death, etc...)

Hope you get the odor out. I saw a lot of good suggestions in the thread.

You also mentioned you are using snap traps to catch the mice. We had a great rodent problem here and it was suggested to me to use peppermint oil (not extract) to keep the rodents away. Apparently they don't like the smell of it? I've been using it for 2 years now and haven't had the problem with the critters in the attic as long as I remember to refresh it every few weeks.
