To give context, this morning all the hens and roosters were perfectly fine (as far as I could tell) and I hadn't noticed anything up until today either (I check them over daily).
However, I went out this afternoon to find one of my broody hens laying on the floor of the coop. I didn't think to much of it coz sometimes their just weird like that, you know? So I went to pick her up to put her on the roost to nap and discovered she has a hole through her skin to the point I can actually see her ribcage inside of her (image below). I brought her home and pet her until she passed at 2:55pm.
I wanted to know if any of you might know what happened. I think personally that it was over-breeding and rough roosters because we've had a hen shortage for a while (5 roosters and 7 hens, now 6). But I'd love any input or advice you can give, I'm probably gonna end up cooking 2 of the roosters to balance it out a little.

Add on because I forgot to mention due to the situation, the smell coming from the hen makes me think this wasn't just happening today, it's really bad. She was literally rotting while alive.

Welcome to BYC. Sorry for your loss. Where exactly is the wound? Can you take a other picture a little farther away to show the location? Since the wound was smelling bad, it probably happened a day or two ago. If it was on the back of her neck, it may have been rooster damage. If she was broody, the other hens may have attacked her.

It's like just under and behind the wing, I can't really take a picture further away because you can't see the damage properly if I'm not holding the wing up. I'll try but I can't make any promises, one moment

Here we are, that's the best I could do unfortunately. Image one I'm not touching anything, images 2 & 3 I'm holding up the wing

Looks like an animal attack to me. What’s around your area? Have you spotted anything near your coop lately? The feathers look damp from something other than blood. That is why I believe it’s an animal attack.

It's a locked coop no way in no way out and no holes or anything that would suggest something dug it's way in

We have several dogs on the property too so predators tend to stay away for the most part, when I picked her up the other hens and a rooster were pecking at the area so it's possible they caused it but it's also possible they were just pecking because they could smell it or saw blood idk

Ah, they caused the damage after she died. The only thing you can do right now is get her autopsied. You can send her into your state’s lab to figure out what caused it.
