Closing Time
Chirping
When I check her in the morning her crop feels flat to me. But she also isn’t eating much in the first place. I’m not feeling anything hard or squishy. Her breath doesn’t smell weird. But to be fair, my crop palpation skills are amateur at best. But I’ve been giving her olive oil mixed in with what she will eat just to try to lube things up if that’s the issue. You can give her the Chick starter, amount of Amprolium in it is very small. See if she likes that better.
If worms are the only issue, then usually you should see improvement by the end of treatment.
I suspect she has more going on, but so hard to know what. Most common in laying hens is unfortunately reproductive disorders.
She may indeed have infection. The drinking a lot to me still points to digestive/crop problems, but this is often a symptom of underlying condition(s) = reproductive, infection, worms, Coccidiosis, etc.
Her crop is emptying? You could try an antibiotic an see if the medication makes a marked difference. Or maybe wait to see if she improves with deworming...it's your call on that.
Baytril is the stronger of the 2, toss the eggs for a couple of weeks. Amoxicillin is very good too, so either one should help if she has a bacterial infection. Do get some probiotics into her if you give antibiotics.
I did give the other chickens some cucumber this afternoon and she went to town on it. She wasn’t interested before. She’s posturing and keeping my other hen in check, so it looks like she’s feeling well enough for the social dynamic. Or she’s trying to rally so she stays on top while she’s sick. There have been zero implications of any bullying, but she’s only with one other hen and our rooster.
I’ll try some chick mash tomorrow and see if it might tempt her. I honestly may just throw some baytril at her too while I’m at it. I don’t care so much about the eggs, I really would like to try get her over this if possible and don’t want my other BA to end up being the only hen with our rooster until the babies grow up. I’m pretty sure we’re going to lose our other BA that’s been on hospital for the last two months here soon and that’s half my current flock.
Is there anything I’m outright missing here or should be doing that I’m not yet? I think I have a lot of this covered but maybe there’s a crop treatment I’ve missed besides the oil and rubbing.
