my special lady has decided that we are going to start making food for our dogs and we are seeking out a great recipe. anybody have one that their dogs love? please keep in mind we have access to what the general public might have access to. none of out best friends are hunters or butchers or farmers or anything like that. we are looking for a recipe we could make from the grocery store...

easy,80% meat,10%bones,5% liver,5% other organs..start by giving aroud 2% of their ideal adult body weight..no recipes needed, adjust as needed by condition of dogs body.if you really want to make it easy google whole prey model diet for dogs..

Whatever diet you end up on, you'll want to make sure it is balanced for dogs. There are a lot of trace nutrients that they need. To formulate your own diet you really need to know a lot about nutrition. There are some home made diets that have been approved by veterinary nutritionists, and I'd try to find one of those. A slight imbalance may take months, even years, to show up.

We did a home cooked diet for our dog after a cancer diagnosis, he felt great during those last few months, and I think at least some of it was the diet. I don't have that recipe anymore though, and I don't know if it was balanced for long term use.

I also have a dog with advanced cancer and am currently giving her this type of diet with amazing results. I give her whole chicken carcasses (including all bones!) from the grocery store, boiled up with a little oatmeal. Additional liver and organs thrown in since she has low iron. Frequent raw or cooked beef bones or sometimes pork legs with meat still on them. I add liquid dog vitamins on top. It's pretty easy to make up a big pot of it. Hope that helps!

I would boil the oatmeal not the chicken!

I agree. Feeding raw chicken is fine. Boiling the chicken will make the bones brittle and can cause problems.

I've cooked for our dogs for years. One recipe, I buy the 10 lb bags of chicken leg quarters when they are on sale, boil them down, debone them, put the meat back in the pot w/the broth, add a bag of broccoli, green beans, peas & carrots, chicken livers and brown rice, cook it all down & put in ziploc bags in the freezer.
another - cook down ground beef, mix with any combination of above veggies & brown rice OR oatmeal & shape into meatloves & bake & freeze. Can also use tuna instead of beef.
Tuna & eggs are also good. Also add boiled, chopped eggs into any of the other above recipes, or spinach instead of broccoli, or turkey instead of chicken, etc.
They all have thrived on this for years. They also get servings of cottage cheese mixed w/above sometimes, or pasta instead of rice or oatmeal.

lol groundhog mice and wild rabbits no need for prep my dog runs around in our field and gets them herself.....she carrys the rabbits around like a stuffed animal sometimes it cute yet nasty cuz she is an indoor dog but we have trained to to drop the "food" before coming in wish she would either eat it or leave it in the field anyway thats my home made dog food
