How do I get Buff Leghorns using other breeds?

Hello breeders, how are you?

I live in Brazil, and here we don't have Buff Leghorns.

We have the Breed Leghorns in different colors, but don't have the buff plummage anywhere. Since it's very difficult to import eggs or birds from another countries, I'm thinking about using another breed that we have, with the buff plummage, to get Buff Leghorns through breeding.

In Brazil we have these colors: white, quail, silver, pile and black.

I'm thinking about using Catalana Del Prat, buff, to add the buff genes to Leghorns, since Catalanas and Leghorns are from the mediterranean group.

I want to know which colors I can use in Leghorn to breed with the buff Catalanas to get faster f1 and f2 generations with buff color. And how do I have to keep choosing the sons of the generations (f1, f2, f3) to keep the buff color and also get closer and closer to the Leghorn standard, until eventually I get a pure breed Buff Leghorn.

I've tried usind the chick calculator but I don't know how to use it properly and I just get more and more confused.

Thanks in advance for your contributions.

You have quail colored Leghorns? May I see what you mean?
If you use a brown Leghorn male with buff Prat hens and select for buff coloration, yellow legs, and Leghorn traits you can get Leghorns with Catalana Buff coloration, though they won't be solid buff.

Yes, we have quail Leghorns. But now I remember from the videos I watched on Youtube and threads that I read here that usually american breedes call that color as "brown" leghorns.
I attached one photo from a close breeder, so you can see and check if we are talking about the same plummage color.

I know that the first generation from breeding Leghorns x Catalanas will be the F1, and I'll have some with buff plummage, but then what? I cross the buff F1 between then to get more F2 buff descendants and then cross the buff F2 with quail leghorns again, to get buff descendants with more Leghorn genes?

I don't know about Buff Minorcas here in Brazil. I've seen black Minorcas, but not Buff. But I'll look for Buff Minorcas. I know that buff is a difficult color to get, even pure breed buff Leghorns require good selection to have a good buff color, but my first chalenge is to get a buff bird with the most Leghorns genes and characteristics.

I agree, it will be easiest if you start with the most Leghorn-like Buff bird you can get.

If you have any actual buff birds in the F1, I might cross them back to Leghorns and see if you can get any buff birds in the next generation (with more Leghorn genes.) If that is possible, it will be by far the fastest way: cross back to Leghorn in every generation, and always pick the best buff chicks to use in the net generation.

Unfortunately, I think you are more likely to get F1 chicks that show mixed colors, and you will have to cross them to each other or back to buff to get any actual buffs. Then yes, cross back to Leghorn, then interbreed the mixes to get some actual buffs, then cross to Leghorn again... It should be possible, but could be time-consuming.

In Brazil we have these colors: white, quail, silver, pile and black.
I agree that quail will be the best of those colors to use in developing Buff Leghorns.

Buff Minorcas would be ideal if you want true buff, but Buff Prat are fine if you want the Prat coloration of Black-Tailed Buff.

Unfortunately we don't have many options here in Brazil with mediterranean breeds. I was going to use other breeds, like Orpington, but then I discovered that one breeder has the Buff Catalanas, and thought it would be better and easier to use another mediterranean breed.

First I thought about using Buff Orpington chickens in this project, but I would have not only trouble with the plumage color but also with the shape of the body of the offspring in a crossing between Buff Orpington x Leghorns...

I also breed Ameraucanas and I read that John Blehm used Buff Orpingtons to create the Buff Ameraucanas, that's why I thought about using Orpingtons, but a mediterranean breed would be easier to go back to Leghorn caracteristics...

But maybe I get some Buff Orpingtons and some other Buff birds from other breeds to get an improved buff, in the future.

For now, with the advices I got here, i'll get the quail (brown) leghorns and the buff catalanas.
