How long till dog goes into heat again after having a litter

@igorsMistress I am not sure what I said to earn that, but, :hugs

The facts about even papered dogs being euthanized and the over crowding in shelters. Shelters in my state are shipping animals out that might have better chances for adoption elsewhere. It's a sad situation. I understand the allure of making money off them, not saying at all that's the OPs intention, but we tend to rescue or have breeds at higher risk for ending up in shelters.

In some large cities you can't even adopt a puppy until it's been spayed or neutered. You don't just sign an agreement and pay a deposit, the surgery is actually done before it leaves the shelter, even as young as 8 weeks! Which I think is not only amazing but brilliant. You have to have a fenced yard too, you can't keep a dog on a tie-out, at least not in Tucson. I wish these laws were universal.

ETA: where I live now, hardly anybody has fences. Dogs are a dime a dozen, sigh.

It's the same in Phoenix for the spay/neuter. Doesn't matter whether it's dogs or cats.

It's only an estimate at 6 months after the puppies are born. We have 2 dogs from the same person...only 7 months apart and the second litter was an accident. Clearly with a 63 day gestation period the female was in heat in less than 6 months.

Thankfully she was spayed as soon as the second litter of puppies were gone and she only had 3. Her owner thought she had a bit more time, she was scheduled for spay and they realized she was pregnant already.

Thanks all! So do they go into heat 6 months after birth or their last cycle?

It's not an exact science, it's an approximation. You need to know your dog and pay attention. People don't, unfortunately, and that's one reason there are so many unwanted puppies flooding the shelters. Best plan is to spay her as soon as the puppies are weaned. ;)

Being large breed have a pen hip study at 2 years then after that must have good or better them have her eyes looked at retinal atrophy can happen be as smart as the dog .. I will leave my soapbox now :boweven pure breeds get euthanized :rant
