I am wondering what they are like and if they are mean? I ordered some australorps through Ideal today that will be here this Friday and I wanted to keep a male for breeding purposes? Are they a good choice in a roo? I was also planning on keeping a cochin male as well. WOndering if that would be a bad idea? To keep two roos? In the end I will have about 22 hens and 2 roos.

A friend of ours has black australorps and he said his boys are nice. Not so nice that they like to be cuddled, but they just go about their daily routine and aren't bothered by him out working in his lavish gardens.

I think you'll like them. They are beautiful roos.

I only have Australorp hens. I do however have about 4 roos together, but I have a pretty large pen for them. They do okay.

I have a Australorp Roo and he is nice 98% of the time. (Just dont touch his new girls yet)
His name is Digger after the monster truck grave digger. He is a great guard dog though

I had an Australorp Roo last year. He became very aggressive toward my children around the five month old mark. He tried to mess with me once but I was able to show him that I was boss. My kids just weren't big enough to do that. We had to rehome him to a family without kids.

He was a fantastic Roo to his girls though. He kept a great watchful eye on them and would find treats when out free ranging and call them over to eat it.

I did an informal survey on Roosters here last year. Australorps got one of the worst raps as becoming aggressive toward people.

Brahmas and Barred Rocks got the best reviews.

My sis has an Aussie boy and he is very mean! She can't go out her door without a buggy whip for protection....and he's real sneaky about, kind of stalks her and attacks from behind. I told her to make soup but she won't listen. Guess she likes carrying a buggy whip everywhere she goes!

We had one and he was mean. He would attack any of us. My boss roo had to protect us from him. One night he stayed out and the next morning was gone. I can't say that I was sorry.
