Is my chick dumb or just lazy?

Ok so I have this chick that's 8 days old (it's by itself because it was born late and we had to help him,put him in a toaster oven because we don't have an incubator and haven't gotten things together for a brooder; mom hatched the others and they're fine, they were already out of the nest when we found the slightly perforated egg and the chick was still alive). I've tried leaving it feed and water and even if I dip it's beak it won't drink so I give it water with a eye dropper, also it won't eat the feed unless I give it to it with a toothpick (also eats it softened).

I took it out with mom and it's siblings and he seems like a baby in kindergarten who plays with the others, even tries to imitate them and eat, but when they leave it won't follow, and when it's inside it won't eat unless I feed it. Should I just leave the feed and hunger will force it to eat...?
Am I just pampering it too much maybe...? Always go to it when it cries to see if it needs food or water and it's growing well; just really seems like he was late by maybe two days.

About a week and a half ago we decided to leave mom with her chicks and this one we helped with them as well. Since mom always recognized it and accepted it, we were lucky enough that with this constant interaction the chick finally got the idea that she has to be with mom and is now completely integrated and learning and growing. Thanks for the advice guys, just wanted to let you know it all turned out OK.
