Leghorns have large single combs that often flop over. It is normal.

I meant to provide pictures of the this hen's backside/vent. Not a picture of her walking around in the pen. Red poop is not normal nor is a "not looking good" backside.

The feed store sold you old hens in bad health and told you to feed them scratch? Yikes.

Did they explain to you have hens slow down on egg laying after 2-3 years old so you may not get any eggs from these?

I'm no expert but that looks like worms in the poop....

She has a lot of intestinal shed in that dropping. And there are some worms in it. I would get Safeguard liquid goat wormer and worm that bird along with the rest of your flock. The best way to handle it is to give a 1/4 ml of safeguard liquid goat wormer per pound of body weight to each bird once a day for 5 days in a row.

You should not eat the eggs that are laid my the birds from the first dose until 2 weeks after the last dose.

It's very important that you go out and get a proper bag of feed. Tractor supply carries Flock Raiser. Get a bag of that and start them on it immediately. Give no more than a small handful of that scratch per day.

I would take the Leghorn with the messy bottom and soak her in a warm bath with a little bit of Dawn dish liquid in it and swirl the warm water around her back side to get her feathers clean. You may have to change the water a couple of times. When you're finished give her a good rinse and a towel dry and let her go off to preen herself while she dries for the rest of the day. If you leave her with a poopy butt she can get flystrike which is a very ugly situation for a bird to find itself in.

Fermented feed- gut health.

it’s super simple. Take whatever commercial feed that’s appropriate you’re using. Take whatever container you have fill it nearly half with feed and then put in water to cover it by a couple inches loosely cover it. And let it sit for a few days.

Then scoop out and serve. I give fermented feed midday when it’s hot outside. Because it also has a high liquid content. It’s their little midday treat. And then I removed the container a few hours later when I’m doing cleanup and getting ready for for the flock to come back in for their veggies and fruit

And cost saving if money is of concern. Unless you’re free range 100% of the time. No one really said chickens were cheap :idunno

Did they have a health guarantee?
So the chickens were living in the feed store for 5 to 6 years? And you picked them up.

And that butt right there is a really bad sign.

Is there a manager there that you can talk to and explain the situation? Or was it ‘as is’ situation?
I need set the story straight. Bought 5hens 5,6,7MONTH old. 1 had a nasty cloaca, vent, butt. SO after all the feedback I got, I was able to return her in exchange for another in much better condition. Thanks to Jenny mgr of El Rancho Feed Store. So spread the word. 👍👌😁🐓🐔
