Oh I’d love to show him, he’s got such a calm personality and is easy to handle, but I think his legs are too long and that ‘stylish’, lady-killer comb would hold him back. But he’s a winner in my eyes. Picked him out of the 17 cockerels I got this summer, he just stood out too much to rehome. He's almost show quality!
Oh what a little cutie pie.View attachment 1230355

Yep, his comb is a little shy and legs a little long, that's why I said: "almost".Oh I’d love to show him, he’s got such a calm personality and is easy to handle, but I think his legs are too long and that ‘stylish’, lady-killer comb would hold him back. Any pointers for a newbie? I’ve got close to a dozen of his babies in an incubator right now from my btb pullet and that black pullet who has almost no legs at all, she’s standing up in that shot. Sadly I lost my nice btw girl, they would have made such a good pair. Hoping for a few squat little ones to fawn over in a couple weeks.Yep, his comb is a little shy and legs a little long, that's why I said: "almost".
I use to raise show quality BTW's
You know about the lethal gene when breeding two short legged birds? He would be good to breed with a short legged hen. Also, the crooked tail trait is another fault that's extremely hard to breed out of them.Any pointers for a newbie? That was my thought in keeping him, since all my girls are tight to the ground. Better to sell off taller chicks as pets than throw away dead ones. Show birds also have much cleaner black on the wings from what I’ve seen in photos, but there isn’t much show blood around here to tap into, or shows for the matter. You know about the lethal gene when breeding two short legged birds? I feel like we're hy-jacking this thread....you want the tail standing up. And the feathers shouldn't have any white lacing to them...that's another trait hard to breed. The males should have a robust comb as well. That was my thought in keeping him, since all my girls are tight to the ground. Better to sell off taller chicks as pets than throw away dead ones. What’s more preferred, a tail held a little away from the body like his or my buff boy’s that’s glued to the back of his head at attention?
