He is so beautiful and that is great he gets his own pad and harem!I moved a cockerel in with my old hens (they're molting if you can't tell ) he was so quiet and the lowest in the pecking order in with all the boys. It was like a switch got flipped as soon as he went in with the ladies. He was flapping his wings, crowing, and dancing. By the second day he seemed to feel quite comfortable that the girls and the coop are his and he was happily growling his discontentment at anything he doesn't agree with.

I'm going to have to agree with this.More coops, more coops!!
And, if he's building 1 more coop, we might as well just do 2 to get that out of the way upfront I'm not sure where to put them though I've already lined most of our back perimeter fence with coops. The next spot I could put coops I wouldn't be able to have water or power, I would need about 250' to 300' of hose and that's just a pain especially in the winter, and every time we mow in the summer.I'm going to have to agree with this.
And this is the voice of reason speaking, not just enabling because I heard you've placed an order.
Don't know the exact details because all I heard was...
"I'm getting Marans, blah blah blah, blah blah blah...."
Well, seeing as your getting Marans. And, if he's building 1 more coop, we might as well just do 2 to get that out of the way upfront I'm not sure where to put them though I've already lined most of our back perimeter fence with coops. Yes! Hatchery chicks coming in March!!! and also yes, there are a few Marans I wasn't ever going to get hatchery chicks again, but, to get the exact ladies I need for a few of my lovely gentlemen, I needed outside bloodlines and just buying pullets will make that part easier. Then, I had to add a few to get over the minimum order number, and a few extras for the layer flock...
Now I have a few people helping out with processing, I'm feeling a bit freer to hatch some extras. People are always looking for pullets, so if I hatch more than I was planning for myself, it's looking like that won't be such a bad thing. I was also hesitant to hatch because of the Mareks losses I've had this year, but once I saw they were all from one single hatch, and I'm confident I know why... I don't think I'll have near the losses at all next year.
I want to start hatching next month which may involve getting lights on in the mornings and getting a second incubator as well as NPIP.And, if he's building 1 more coop, we might as well just do 2 to get that out of the way upfront I'm not sure where to put them though I've already lined most of our back perimeter fence with coops. Not set in stone yet, just preliminary thoughts going. But I would like to at least double my hatch rate from this year.Whooooooo! I can't wait until you have wee little for some photos! You'll be 2 months ahead of me
