My chickens have worms, what dewormer do I get?

Just saw worms in one of my hens poop so what is some deworming medications I can get for them and the dosage? I’m close to a tractor supply, could I use a certain goat dewormer?

SafeGuard Liquid Goat Wormer is used by many to treat worms. Since roundworms are the most commonly seen worm without a microscope, you can treat for those, or treat for all possible worms with a 5 day treatment. Dosage is 1/4 ml per pound given once and again in 10 days for roundworms. To treat most possible worms except tapeworms, give it for 5 consecutive days.

Could I put it in their water? I’m planning on treating all my chickens and I have about 35 of them, also should I treat chicks like around 3 months of age or no?

No, SafeGuard does not mix in water. SafeGuard Aquasol, the type that does mix in water is almost $300, and most do not use it. I have treated more than that, but I have used the one time, and repeat in 10 days dose. You can treat one breed one evening after dark, by taking them off the roost, and do another breed or color the next night. You can treat the chicks at 3 months. Or you could wait and treat the chicks a bit later.

Wazine used to be sold, and it could go into the water for 1 day, repeated in 14 days, and treated roundworms. Levamisole (Prohibit) can be used in the water, but dosage for chickens is a little hard to find. Here is a link for where to buy it:

What about Valbazen? Isn't that just one treatment and then again 10 days later? Giving a chicken safeguard 5 days in a row was not fun.

Valbazen is very good—I have used it. Again it is not water soluble, and has to be dosed individually. It does kill most worms with 2 doses, 10 days apart. But, it is harder to find in some feed stores, and is more expensive. My TSC diesn not sell if, but you can call around or order it online. Dosage is 1/2 ml for a full size hen, 1/4 ml for a bantam, and 3/4 ml for a very large hen or rooster.

Valbazen is pretty pricey just looked it up but the Safeguard can be given to them once then again in 10 days to kill the roundworms, will it still kill the roundworms if I do the 5 day treatment? Just want to make sure.
