So we are new to chicks. I have one chick, upon our twice daily butt inspection, that has a sever build up of pasty butt. After a few days of this, I notice she has an appendage/ feather over her vent and her vent is really small compared to the others in the flock. This last cleansing I did apply Vaseline to her butt and around her vent to keep poop from sticking. She’s also getting really upset and acts like wiping her fur after cleaning hurts so I end up leaving her a little wet on the butt. Am I causing more pasty butt by keeping her a little more wet/ cold compared to others. Could she have a small/ inefficient vent? Could she have a downward appendage growing above her vent? I need suggestions and help please ❤️

Hi, and welcome to BYC!

We'd need to see a picture if you're thinking there's some deformity.

I hatch a ton and occasionally have a repeat chick with pasty butt. I just give them probiotic water for a day, then a day for fresh water, then back to probiotic water for one more day.

There are a lot of powders made for this. We use HydroHen but know Save A Chick makes one and Durvet.

Be sure they have a large enough brooder so they can escape the heat if they want. Usually, pasty butt comes from overheating.

Here’s what I got this morning. After the night and making sure she had Vaseline, she didn’t have pasty butt today.

This is the quick pic I took. It doesn’t really show what’s right above her vent when she’s wet. You can see her vent is small and red.

I think it's just normal. I'd not leave it wet anymore though. If it's not raw, this sounds mean, but if she gets another big blob of poop there, just try yank it off if it seems loose. That saves you soaking her butt anymore than you have to. If you do feel the need to soak her bottom, blow dry her butt on low.

Ouch, no pulling, pls! If a poo log starts to gather on feathers i dab it and/or above it with coconut cream which melt fast and the poo slides right off without handling or stressing the chick.
