I read in a recent newspaper that some raging pit bulls got loose and were running all over a neighborhood. They killed 12 chickens(the owners had 13, and 1 survived). Many of the chickens were severily injured and had to be culled. The pit bulls also ran into a lady's yard, where her young children were playing. She told them to climb up on their playset and stay there. Luckily, Animal Control caught the pit bulls and found the owner. She said she would replace the chickens. The pit bulls were to be tied up and the owner had to pay a fine.
I forgot when this happened and all the other details, but that's really too bad to loose all those chickens.

And the chicken's owner's daughter saw all the chickens being attacked, which is even worse.

When did our society start placing the life of a pit bull over that of a child's??? Those dogs, IMO, should have been put down as they are a clear threat to the life of those children. Idiot owners who allow their pit dogs to run free are too stupid to trust! Even if they attempted to secure them in the past, it didn't work and it probably won't again in the future.

I know from personal experience with a neighbor who has too much money and no sense! He finally got rid of his American bulldog when it bit one of his children (after 4 vicious attacks against my golden retriever).

It said that the dogs weren't put down, since they didn't attack anyone. Apparently they think that if it attacks and kills 12 chickens, it doesn't really matter, but if it attacks a human, then it matters.

Doesn't really make much sense! Chickens are just as "special" as humans! (probably better; you don't see chickens cheating, stealing, lying, etc. well except if you count them stealing food from each other LOL)

But my point is is that it will probably happen again; the owner said that she had tied them up but they got loose.

My neighbor's dog had to be tied up because it came over and killed my chickens. It broke the first rope, broke or chewed through a much thicker rope, and then broke a chain. And it was just a lab, not a pit bull, which is even stronger.

It is a shame the chickens were killed, but if the dog would have been any other breed, it wouldn't have made news. Were the dogs trying to hurt the children, or just being typical goofy pits?

I agree the dogs shouldn't have been running loose. No dog should.

"Raging pitbulls"?

Gee, that wasn't a biased comment. Why is a pit bull attacking chickens any more noteworthy than, say, a German Shepherd or a Husky attacking chickens?

"The pit bulls also ran into a lady's yard, where her young children were playing."

If an enraged cocker spaniel had entered the yard and bitten the children, would the event have made a news story. No. The pit bull scare is largly media driven.

"When did our society start placing the life of a pit bull over that of a child's??? Those dogs, IMO, should have been put down as they are a clear threat to the life of those children"

I don't believe the OP said anything about the dogs threatening the children. She posted just that they ran into the yard. I'm sure if the dogs had been actively attacking the children they would have been put down. Just running into a yard does not constitute attacking a child.

"Idiot owners who allow their pit dogs to run free are too stupid to trust!"

Any dog owner who lets ANY dog run free are stupid. ALL dogs should not be allowed to run free and should be kept on the owner's property.

"said that the dogs weren't put down, since they didn't attack anyone. It is very tragic when a dog attacks chickens and usually the owner DOES have the option to put the dogs down on the spot if they catch the dog in the act and own a gun. I'm sure Ms. Hayward could have disposed of that lab and been well within her rights had she had the chance or chosen to do so. But I am grateful Ms. Hayward made her post as it shows other breeds can be just as destructive.

Chickens are just as special to me as all my other pets, but not as special as humans. Do I equate the life of my child equal to that of one off my chickens? No. Not even equal to that of all of my chickens.

"But my point is is that it will probably happen again; the owner said that she had tied them up but they got loose."

Yes, it will probably happen again. But if you check around on BYC you will see that there are many chicken killing dogs that are serial offenders, not just pits.

It seems the main reason the OP started this thread is that she was offended by Pits being allowed to run loose. I feel I should remind the OP that you should feel equally offended by ANY dog running loose.

Thank you SO much, werecatrising, for supplying this thread with a reality check
