No more laying?

Hey Geese peeps,

I’ve gone through my flock and I have confirmed I have 4 ganders and 8 geese. We got like 40 eggs at the beginning of the season, then 1 of the girls went broody (still is) and it seems like no one is laying anymore. Is this common? Does 1 broody goose influence the rest of the flock if they’re all together? I know at least 1 of my older geese is laying because I get 1 egg every other day or so, but the one sitting on the nest has 10 eggs currently. She’s fluctuating between 8 - 10 eggs (she’s cracked a few), but from what I’ve seen there’s no way that we have 8 geese and getting so few eggs…

Thanks folks!

They go through cycles. They lay for a while to produce a clutch. Either they set or take a break if you remove the eggs. They are laying to reproduce. Here the breeding and laying season runs through the end of June.

Okay, that makes sense, I guess I’m just confused because last year we had just 2 geese and it was their first spring, they laid every other day consistently through the season. This year it’s their second spring and everyone else’s first spring. One of last year’s girls is laying every other day or so, everyone else’s has kinda stopped. Only one has created a nest (the pilgrim) and she is sitting with intent. It’s been a couple weeks so far. Every once in a while one of the other girls will sit next to her nest, but no new eggs in the spot or under the broody one… are you suggesting that a little later in the season they might just start laying again?

I would expect them to resume laying again at some point. They do lay throughout the season, but not constantly. At least that's what I've seen with my flock.
