It used to be simple to buy antibiotics for my poultry. I’m not sure when that all changed, but it has.

We had a cold snap, with rain and snow, and now I have a turkey that is sick. There are so many disceases that they can get, that I don’t even know what it could be. I’m thinking it’s respiratory. He can’t gobble well, when he “thumps” it’s gargled sounding, and he has a white mucus in his mouth. Plus, he sounds congested. I’m going to try to treat him with antibiotics, but what do I use that I can get at the feed store? Oh, preferably a non-injection antibiotic.

Help!

I'm not an expert on it, but I do know that Tylan 50 injectable can be given orally with a syringe to treat respitory illnesses in chickens & turkeys. It can be purchased at Tractor Supply stores. The snap shot I'm sharing is a post that @casportpony shared on an older thread.

Hope this helps, I would post in the emergency thread as well. @Wyorp Rock.

I found out the *Turkey* Tylan dose is 132 mg/kg per day (60 mg per pound per day) and it needs to be given no less than twice a day.

Tylan 50 oral dose for turkeys:
0.6 ml per pound twice a day
0.4 ml per pound three times a day
0.3 ml per pound four times a day

Tylan 200 oral dose for turkeys:
0.15 ml per pound twice a day
0.1 ml per pound three times a day
0.075 ml per pound four times a day

This if for medicating water, but the same applies to giving it orally, the per day target dose is 60 mg per pound. :D

CRD indications:

  • Administer medicated drinking water for three days; however, medicated water may be administered for one to five days depending upon severity of infection. Treated chickens must consume enough medicated water to provide 50 mg per pound of body weight per day. Only medicated water should be available to the birds.
Turkeys:

FYI: this changed January 1, 2017. Nearly all livestock antibiotics that are given via food/water (actually only the ones "important to human health" which is... nearly all, by definition) now require a prescription from a veterinarian.

Man, I miss the day of just getting the powder to add to the water. Thanks for the info.
