Hi! We are just finishing our dream coop and have insulated it. The inside has plywood siding. I want to paint it as I am thinking it would help it to stay cleaner and may even help in preventing some bug issues (like mites) from living in the wood. My question is: is there some type of paint that is not harmful to the chickens? Does anyone out there paint the inside of their coop? (First-timer here )

You can use whitewash. I used a non VOC paint (white.... if you add tint that may contain VOCs) There are many low VOC paints available now as well. Air the painted coop out well and as long as you can, not just a couple of hours. My first coop was painted with leftover low VOC paint. Never had issues but also keep coop well ventilated.

The kids are only 3 weeks old so we have some time to air it out - if it would only stop raining :) Thanks for your help!

You need a paint that is not harmful for animals. I just researched it for my own small coop and found the following on the consumer website: valspar duramax from lowes for exterior and Valspar signature for interior are low VOC. Here’s what they say about the Duramax: Valspar DuraMax contains less than 50 grams per liter of VOCs, like Behr Premium Plus Ultra, thus meeting the voluntary standards for low-VOC, low-toxic paints established by Green Seal in 1993, updated in 2010.
The Valspar signature series is zero VOC. The paint can be made in ANY color. It can also be color matched to the paint of your house. (I match the coop color and trim to my outside door and door post colors. I hope the info helps you.

All latex paint is safe... Just air it out for a few days. I caulked all corners and seams to make it easier to clean and keep bugs out.
I mixed 4 different colors I had laying around.
It was 4 weeks before I put my day old chicks in it. They just turned 7 weeks ago.
Try to avoid using a flat finish..

I used a low VOC white for cleaning purposes. When I was looking at paint, I did see a brand at Lowes that said something along the lines of safe for animals or barn paint. But low or VOC free is fine.

Thank you! We ended up painting the outside with the same paint as our house. Since our chickens were not living in the coop yet, I was told that it wasn’t quite as important to have low VOC paint - but we did anyway. Can’t be too careful with the kids. :love
