From what I've seen most pigeon cages ( breeding cages etc) have 3 sides closed in and only 1 wire. Is that nessasary? or is a cage with all sides ( besides a small box for shelter) wire ok?

In the wild they nest in caves, so they feel most comfy with an enclosed kind of set-up. If you let a whole bunch into a new loft the most dominant pigeons will get the highest and darkest nests. That said, street pigeons will nest almost anywhere, and I have a pair that I put in a quarantine cage which was just a very big bird cage and they nested in there. They just like feeling enclosed. Also there is less bickering if they don't see the nestbox next to them.

Pigeons Do Ok In Cold Weather But Direst Drafts On Them Are Bad So Protect Them From Drafts South And West Exposre Is The Best Here In Texas My Loft Is Open All The Way Around But When It Gets Cold Say From November To March I Put Up Plastic Drop Sheets To Protect Them From The Winds
