Hi all
This is my first incubation
1st chick hatched but took a very long time
2nd pipped and made a hole which looked way too big to me (photo attached), then started unzipping and suddenly stopped breathing and died.

Any advice as to what happened here for future reference is there anything I could have done to intervene?

We have 14 eggs so far one hatched, one died and no other signs yet

what day are you at? What is the humidity? What breed of chickens laid the eggs?

That happens and there is nothing much you can do once the eggs are in the incubator, hatching takes a lot out of a chick and some just are not strong enough to make it.

If the eggs came from your chickens make sure the parents are getting all of their vitamins, especially their vitamin B's and all of their minerals to give the chicks the best possible chance of making it.

hey thats what exactly happened to my quail chick, it pipped and then suddenly stopped and then it died, like i saw the pip and i saw the tip of its beak and assumed it will come out on its own
then after a few hours it just died, no suffocation, as no dry membrane on its beak, body still wet, so I am very puzzled to why the check fully developed during its incubation period only for it to die when it was ready to hatch

Ive got another pipped egg, this one is still alive but it too seems stuck in the egg and I dont want to prematurely hatch the chick in case it dies because of a non absorbed yolk

very frustrating

yah the air vents are opened, I placed a wet sponge for extra humidity, so the membrane doesnt dry up around the beak and pipped area, out of the 15 eggs 1 pipped and 1 has already died, Im gonna not go work for the next 2 days as I need to monitor these pipped eggs as they tend to die and they would die like that in a real nest with its mom, I bet the mother birds identify the pipped eggs and take action, what action that is, is unknown

Maybe it too humid and they are drowning. What's the humidity? It can be very frustrating.

humidity 70-80% so check this out, the 2 eggs that piped i wasn't aware until it was to late, one of the chicks died in the egg, so the other egg I intervened, I carefully cut a hole and removed the membrane which is like adhesive to the chicks.
These are Chinese silver striped quails which are half the size of a normal quail egg, so then within the hour "2" more pipped ever so slightly, i put the eggs in my ear and could clearly hear multiple pecking, these shells are tough for these tiny bumble bee sized chicks.
I knew that if the chicks failed to crack out of the eggs then they would die of exhaustion.
so straight away I made the pipped eggs bigger and basically I cut around the tiny egg half way thru, a bit like taking off the lid, the 2 chicks were ever so weak, 2 hours later they still couldnt release themselves from the half n egg, that membrane is like glue, I released the chicks myself and now have 4 which seem fine.
One of them looks a bit weak but Im sure it will pull thru
only one egg hatched totally without my help, that chick cut through the shell like a soldier, the top half was destroyed, now that chick out of the 6 was the only one that hatched gangsta style
Im so sure that the other 5, if I didn't intervene then no doubt I would of had more dead chicks
so Ive placed them back in the incubator so they can settle in, then I will put them in the heated brooder

I just need to figure out how to train these chicks to eat and drink.

Wow that is wild. I'm glad you have some live chicks.
