Hello All! I am a little confused on my research. A few weeks ago, my husband bought some barred plymouth rock chicks at an auction. One batch contained 11 chicks then he bought a batch of 24 chicks labeled brown egg layers and a few of these are looking to be barred rocks as well. Now they are all 5 weeks or older and have their adult feathers. I have a few questions... Should I be able to tell their sex now? I have read that barred rock roosters are lighter, but I have also read that they are darker in color. I have a few that are very l light - they look mostly white with a few gray bars in their feathers. I also have some that are mostly black with a few bars on their feathers. Some of their legs are yellow while others are gray. Of course, I also realized that cuckoo marans can have barred feathers. How can I tell if my mystery chicks are plymouth rocks or marans?

Marans have more of an unorganized barring pattern. Some Marans have feathered feet, others don't like the Barred Rock. Marans lay dark brown eggs while Barred Rocks lay a slightly lighter egg.

The difference is the male kinda has more white and his comb and waddles are bright red and the female's are pale and yellow-ish. As for the barred rocks, they are generally easy to sex too, because the males get their bright red combs early as well.

Here are some pictures of my chicks... maybe you can help me identify their breed and gender?

This looks accurate.
