Racoon attack; wing torn and toes gone.

Thank you for asking. She has been eatting. I haven't seen her drink yet. I did see 4 maggots total since I've cleaned her, but they were not on her but on her bedding. They were pretty decent size tho. I saw 2, then 1 later by last one I saw eariler this morning I don't think was moving so I'm hoping all maggots are gone.
I'm glad she's still alive and eating and seems to have some energy!

I think others will be able to give you guidance on the warning signs of infection and what you should be doing in that regard.

When I went to spray her eariler, she seemed to have more energy and tried to "fly" away from the sink back to the shower where her current home is. She seems to really enjoy the fresh corn kernels and mash.

Question is if she has an infection, how will I know and does this mean I need to clean her out again? her wing and foot seems to be drying out which is good??? I'm not sure. I'm just glad she seems more energetic.
I think the wing drying out may be good. Hopefully @Eggcessive or @coach723 can chime in.

If I remember one thread a long time ago, the skin around an exposed bone did dry up and the bone basically fell out on it's own. So, you may want to hold off on trying to amputate at this time.

I would however consider an antibiotic. If she's doing o.k. now, it's still nice to have one on hand just in case she declines or you detect infection.

I was going to link you to something like Cephalexin, but unfortunately it's hit/miss to get that. So I think Baytril (Enrofloxacin) would be your best choice. I've linked that below.

As for you finding a few large maggots, I'd investigate just to be sure there's not a hidden wound somewhere that may have some activity. With all those fluffy feathers, sometime something can be hidden.

This Sweet Girl is hanging in there and you are too.

Signs of infection would be hot and/or red angry tissue, bad odor, pus and/or if she becomes lethargic. Likely the lethargy would be in a later stage of infection, so watching the tissue is key.

What did you decide to do?

It can be hard to know what to do, but I'm not sure how well that will heal up with that much bone exposed.

Do you have an antibiotic on hand?
Yes the bone exposed worries me as well and I may have to ampute it eventually, but in the meantime I am choosing to try to just let her eat and get her energy up while I see how it heals.

I was very concerned when my cousin told me her dogs rib was sticking out but she assured me the vet who was taking care of her dog said it would fall off on its own when her dog healed inside and it did.

She did eat before this quite a bit.
I think you are doing a good job.

The wounds look o.k. to me. If she were mine, I'd get the antibiotics and start them as soon as I got them.

If the wound(s) get infected, you'll be able to smell it, it will be different than poop, it's hard to describe but you'll know.

Hang in there:hugs
