Racoon attack; wing torn and toes gone.

Hold on....people keep talking about antibotics....this is different than the ointment antibiotics? You guys are taking about an oral antibotics...? In case of internal infection as oppose to one that is external? Like the double antibotic creme I initially used on her day 1?

I just cleaned out her area, which is my shower and then got her another box (maybe it is too small....I'll change it out again soon) and got some fake grass for her to enjoy? I did bring her out and she seemed to enjoy being outside for a few minutes. I brought her outside and dusted her w permethrin dust...then brought her back in and sprayed her with more of that spurr spray. Current picture or her.

Yes, the others were talking about giving her an oral antibiotic because of the exposed bone. Cephalexin and clindamycin are 2 that can treat bone infections which can be hard to treat. You probably do not want to cut the bone off, but just let it be, and hopefully it will heal around it. Without a vet, that is probably the safest way to go. I am glad that she is hanging in there. I agree, her box looks a bit small☺️

Wow - That sweet girl has a strong will and you're doing a great job caring for her following the advice of the experts here. What a disheartening situation but it sounds like she is improving.

The only suggestion I have to offer is if you don't have enough cardboard boxes, do you have access to an old milk crate? Turned on its side with a nesting pad placed in there makes a great private space and it should be large enough. If she is in the bathroom alone, does she need to be in a box? Do you have a blanket she can use - one that isn't fuzzy or has holes or would provide issues with her feet getting caught? Or even a table cloth, which are usually smooth, with some pine shavings for bedding.

Wishing you the best.

Are those 2 the preferred medicines? Can I use Dicloxacillin 500 mg Oral or Ofloxacin OP 0.3% DRO RISI? I just happen to have access to those 2 antibotics, but if I need go get Cephalexin or Clindamycin, then I'll do so. Thank you.

Dicloxacillin is a type of penicillin is an oral antibiotic that probably would not treat a bone infection. Ofloxacin is an antibiotic eye drop used after cataract surgery, and probably not what is needed. I think that both clindamycin and cephalexin are now prescription only. The enrofloxacin that @Wyorp Rock recommended in post 54 may be the best option. But it can take 5-7 days to arrive. You may do fine with just the use of a disinfectant and Neosporin.

I don't know if I will use the medicine, but I did order it....and it did say it will be here within 5 to 8 days. Who knows by then if I will need it or maybe it will be too late. *cry*.
It was about $40 shipped.

Question: how am I suppose to feed her this medicine? break and dilute? will a week be too late if she does have an Infection? I'm hoping she doesn't have an infection...of course.

She has been eatting. I feel like I'm spoiling her and she waits for me to hand feed her, but maybe that's also because I'm sure she is still in pain from the injury.

She does try to flap away a bit when I bring her to the sink before I spray her w the Spurr....I've been mainly using the Spurr spray and not really the vetericyn spray. Sigh.... I'm not sure how effective my Vetericyn spray it since I just noticed it expired in 2024.

I'm pretty sure her maggots are gone....I believe the 5 I saw where the last bits I didn't get from the initial time I saw the maggots. I worked on her for over 30 mins, I think it was 45 mins or so when I initially saw the maggots. Running water over her and picking them off as much as I could. I saw a couple I couldn't get when I was done and I assume those are the 5 I saw....I hope they are all gone now.

I switched out her small box, to a bigger but still small box. I guess I don't need a box since she is in the bathroom all by herself. Anyways here is a pix from last night.

Whether or not my chicken makes it, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who contributed to this thread. I'm hoping this thread will help anyone with a similar issue in the future.

I didn't even think about flies until it was probably already too late....so 1st lesson is any open wound needs to be kept from flies. Best way is to have an enclosure without fly access or indoors. Fly strike can happen so fast.....it's so crazy!!
