Dicloxacillin is a type of penicillin is an oral antibiotic that probably would not treat a bone infection. Ofloxacin is an antibiotic eye drop used after cataract surgery, and probably not what is needed. I think that both clindamycin and cephalexin are now prescription only. The enrofloxacin that @Wyorp Rock recommended in post 54 may be the best option. But it can take 5-7 days to arrive. You may do fine with just the use of a disinfectant and Neosporin
Which med did you order?
Following along this thread and have a question. Does freezing the meds make them less effective? Some meds have a temp range and going out of that range makes them less effectiveDose of cephalexin I use is 35-50 mg/kg every 6 hours. So that is 35-50 mg per 2.2 lbs of body weight for 5 days. So with a 6 lb bird (for example) that would be 95.5 - 136.4 mg per dose, every 6 hours. What I do is empty the capsule(s) into a small dish, as many as needed to make up your doses for the dosing period (have to do math based on your birds weight), and then mix in a small amount of softened (not melted) coconut oil, mix well, and then divide equally into the number of doses you need per your math (4 times a day for 5 days would be 20 doses- depending on how it works out you might do half of that at a time and then make more when you are nearing using those up, whatever works out for you), and then I freeze them on a bit of waxed paper or parchment. Then you have all doses ready. When it's time, put one of those doses in the birds beak, and push back and she will swallow it, like a custom pill, easy, peasy. That's how I do it. I usually start with the higher end of the dose and see how they do, if it seems to be upsetting the digestion (runny, abnormal droppings) I will then reduce it some towards the lower end of the dose range until all is well. It's usually not a problem if that is the only med they are taking.
Is the food in the box with her, or does she have to walk over to get it?She hasn't really eaten or gotten out of her box today. She usually will eat if I hand feed her but I haven't had a chance today and might not until this evening. How concerning is this?
I don't think it's an issue, but don't know the actual answer. I know that I have done it many times with pilled or capsuled medications with no issues.Following along this thread and have a question. Does freezing the meds make them less effective? It's a good tip, thanks!I don't think it's an issue, but don't know the actual answer. I know that I have done it many times with pilled or capsuled medications with no issues.
